Timbren axle-less axles

Has anyone used these on an Airstream? I know the pros - easy install, less weight; but what are the cons?

Interesting concept. I have a feeling you might be the first Airstream using these if that is what you decide.

They look really interesting....especially the air ride one...BUT...I would consult a real engineer. I would be concerned with lateral strength of the AS frame rails as a solid axle distributes lateral forces over 2 frame rails. I am sure it could be modified, even if it meant welding tubes from frame rail to frame rail. May not get much weight savings that way, but the suspensions look really good...and serviceable.

Very cool concept. Would be interested to hear how the project turns out if you go with them. Looks like it would be pretty easy to pick a model to give a little lift to the trailer for those looking to get back in less improved areas.

Following this thread.

Coincidentally, I just ordered (not yet installed on my 2001 Yukon Denali XL) Timbren's SES Suspension Upgrade which replaces the jounce stop on the frame. In essence, it adds another "spring" to the suspension. It is part of my complete replacement of the GM Autoride system which has failed and cannot be fixed because they no longer make the ECU!

I can't claim to be the first (that was Marco IIRC) but I have them fitted on my trailer. I have a custom frame so the decision was easier and so far I'm very happy with them. The cons would be initial cost depending where you live and source them from and chassis changes maybe. I went with the heavy duty 5200 model but with 3500 lb springs and really like the engineering and build quality. Truck your thread is inspirational. If I can find them I want to send you two websites that describe some high level fabrication/restorations of two Flxible busses that you will appreciate.

I'm going to call Timbren in August and ask them about using their axles on my Excella. I'm thinking that welding two tubes from one side to the other might be a good idea for load distribution, but I will ask Timbren first. I also want ask them if they can drill the mounting holes based on my measurements, as their fabrication equipment is better than mine.

Thanks Steve.
I found Timbren really open to questions. I used a rental magnetic clamp on drill for the holes in the frame, if I was doing it again I'd have only accepted a newer unit as the one I used had slop in the mechanism which was a pain.
