Don't want to blow myself up

Say 1974 Overlander new to me and trying to start the furnace. When I tried to light the pilot it took quite awhile for the pilot to stay lit. Then poof a little flam shot out of the whold and put out the pilot. I thought maybe I let to much LPG settle to the bottome of the furnace so I let it sit and tried again the next day. Same thing basically a small explosion. Is there a chance that when I light the pilot that somehow the main burner is leaking LPG? Not to familiar with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the flame is floating above the burner. This may because of a gas pressure problem. If the furnace has not been taken apart and cleaned for a while this could help.

If it is the original furnace you will have a hard time finding parts and most service techs won't work on an old furnace because of liability. Consider putting in a Suburban NT30. Do a seach on the forums and you will find lots of stuff.
