Soldiermedic on way home - needs help! (Wednesday, August 6)

Steve is currently traveling home to Missouri with a new acquisition (I will let him tell you about it in another thread) and needs help along the way. The jack foot on his trailer is broken and will not retract, and he needs to be able to cut it off or fix it quickly so he can get home safely. It is only an inch or two off the ground. He is in Iowa going on I-29 S to Kansas City, then will take I-70 west to St. Louis. Is there anyone along the way who can help him or suggest a shop he can stop at?

Please reply to this thread or PM me and I will get info to him or give you his phone number.

Thank you so much!

Susan

any idea of the brand? crank or electric?
the electric might have a way to crank it by hand.

Susan,

Why not unbolt the jack from the tongue?

It is old, so I am guessing it is manual and is probably welded to the hitch frame.

if it moves at all, some lubricant might help. if weight is still on the tongue, taking the weight off might help it move.

Where in Iowa is he? I have a couple brothers in Des Moines area who could help him out.

He has just passed Sydney and is close to the MO border, so Des Moines is out.

I'm thinking any muffler shop could cut this off?

I'm surprised Steve doesn't have tools with him where he could just unbolt the three screws that hold in the jack post, unless its an electric but one would think it'd be that simple for one of those too.

Aw, dang. I had something all fun planned out for my 1,000th. But a friend in need trumps fun any day in my book!

The jack is welded onto the hitch frame, so he can't unbolt it. And he is on the Interstate, so it is hard to see what amenities are available at what stops. My Next Exit guide is at home and I am at work, so I can't help him there. I suggested a truck stop (sometimes they have repair services) or an automotive shop or even a junkyard, but again, it's hard to know where they are on the Interstate.

Anyone have a Next Exit guide available?

Just find an auto parts store, get a hacksaw, and cut the post off. It sounds like it's no good anyway.

Nationwide RV Sales in Grain Valley MO near Interstate

Googling I came up with this possibility -- Nationwide RV Welcome to Nationwide RV

According to their web site, they have a maintenance area ... they may be on the way for Steve. Their address is 3001 NE Jefferson, Grain Valley, MO 64029. Telephone 816-847-8888. Toll Free number 888-727-8878. They appear to be on the north of Interstate 70 on a frontage road between Adams Point Golf Club and the East Kansas City Airport (on the south side of the Interstate).

manual jack ?
get the cover on top off.
There is a small pin that is holding one of the wheels in place.
this pin might be broken
I had the same problem I just replaced the pin with a nail even a hairpin or paperclip will do to get the jack up.

remcolent, they did try that and it did not work. It is stuck but good! But thank you for the suggestion!

Nancy, thank you for the great information! He thinks he is about 2 hours from Kansas City, so it may be an alternative if he does not find anything before then (service departments are closing as we speak).

Terry--he had thought of that but says his arm is not that good, to cut through that thick steel. He is hoping for a shop with a torch or something.

He is about 50 miles north of St. Joseph, which is where Brad broke down before, so I know there are repair shops there and encouraged him to stop there to see what he can find. I'll report back when I hear from him.

Thank you all very much!

Susan

That's a good idea! Home Depot or Lowes would be open later hours, and would hopefully have one. Do you think it would also cut the foot inside the jack?

Thanks!
