Our Road Trip 2011 in SteSpot

We are on the road with SteSpot---the 1968 Ambassador that was completely rebuilt by Uwe Salwender......We have traveled up from Venice, CA to Oregon, Washington and over to Missoula, Mt. We will make our way back to the Oregon Unit Wally Byam Birthday Bash over July 4 in Baker City, OR (anyone know of a good route from Missoula to Baker City? I'm thinking of taking 12 to 95) then on to Denver, Cheyenne, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, I think ......

If anyone along the way wants to see Uwe Salwender's great work, please let us know....Ste Spot is traveling like a true champion.....and we get's lots of interest wherever we stay.....we were last in the Washington Land Yacht Harbor park in Olympia, WA...it is the Airstream only park started in 1965.....everyone who lives there is a member of the WBCCI........paula

Can't wait to see her, it was so fun to hear from our PO when she mistook your trailer for her old one. She loved it.

It is such a small world

It was so much fun meeting your PO. She was so welcoming and friendly. She made our stay at the Harbor very special. We also met two other folks who are coming to the Wally Byam Birthday Bash. We can't wait to get to Baker City.
We are off to Glacier National park today. P

Today was Glacier National Park

This park is pretty spectacular despite the fact that the Going to the Sun Road was closed at Avalanche Creek due to the heavy snow pack. The vistas of the mountains with the snow was really beautiful. We drove up one side of Flathead Lake and down the other.....

We had some pretty serious rain here and there but it cleared in between.....not a hiking day but had to have some Huckleberry Pie.....delicious....

This is Lake McDonald in Glacier Nat. Parkand the second photo is our dog, Bandit's, lunch while we were away from the truck...he sneaked in the front seat and found a bag of Trader Joe's dog treats......oh, well.

Beautiful Idaho, WA and Oregon again

We have been internet less....so I could not post.....we left wonderful Missoula. Montana and doubled back to Oregon to attend Wally Byam's Birthday Bash in Baker City Oregon....

We traveled Route 12 from Missoula to Lewiston, Idaho and spent a couple of nights at Hell's Gate State Park.....a delightful park--huge sites with full hookups and the weather was beautiful....we drove up the old Lewiston Grade road that is twisty but afforded a beautiful view of the Lewis and Clark Valley...visited the Nez Perce National Park site and learned about the tribe. The name was given to them by the French and it means pierced nose but they do not pierce their noses....(Ed got in a couple of good road bike rides on the very good bike trail network in this area...hope to be able to post some pictures soon.

Today we left Lewiston and we took WA 129 S which becomes OR 3 to Joseph, Oregon......the road was like no road I have ever seen.......windy and twisty with spectacular views.....many many 20 mph hairpin curves......incredible views of the Nez Perce country....It took us 3 hours to drive 90 miles.......but I am so glad we took this route (recommended by Les)......not the major highway route Good Sam had suggested.....the route was uncrowded and we didn't meet too many big trucks.....it felt like we were on top of the world....not sure my camera caught it but will post if it did......and then we were in the bottom.....I highly recommend taking this route if you have good brakes and can downshift into 3rd or even 2nd some times. We saw perhaps 2 or 3 other RVs and a couple of big horse trailers along the way.

We are camped now at Wallowa Lake State Park.....a beautiful lake recommended by a Portland area friend.....

Right now we are parked outside of a library in Joseph picking up wifi. We stopped in and got their password.....

This eastern WA/OR and western Idaho area is breathtaking.......what more can I say.....The Wallowa Mountains are snowcapped and majestic......more later...paula

On the road again.....sort of...

After Joseph, OR we saw Hells Canyon Dam and made it to Baker City, OR for the Wally Byam Birthday Bash....great rally--lots of nice trailers and the towns people of Baker turned out for our Open House.

After a nice restful long weekend, we hit the road for Denver stopping in Ogden, UT and making it to Ft. Collins in 2 long over 400 mile days....pretty country....

We are now at the Ft. Collins KOA and hope to see Rocky Mt. National Park tomorrow. We are getting spectacular rain storms daily......

Will go to Cheyenne, WY on business on Monday then head for Colorado Springs. Anyone have any recommendations for a campground in Colorado Springs?
Paula
Would appreciate it....thanks,

Please help us find a nice place in Colorado Springs.

Currently we are at a KOA in Ft. Collins.....KOA Lakeside....we recommend this RV park.....sites are nicely spaced with concrete pads......level, wifi, enclosed dog run......lake for fishing if you are into that......

We went to Rocky Mountain National Park today....spectacular.....as are the daily thunderstorms.....we like it here......paula

Is the Garden of the Gods near a RV park?

Hi Bill, we do plan on going to the Garden of the Gods....haven't been there since I was a child.....wonder if my impressions will be the same.

We used to visit our favorite aunt in Salida every year traveling from Missouri across Kansas in the middle of July heat.....some years without air conditioning.....and seems like we always had a blow out of a tire in some small Kansas town.....

We love Colorado.....the people and the scenery and the spectacular thunderstorms and rainbows. see the beginning, the end and the middle of a double rainbow yesterday from I-25,

......just hoping someone can give us a recommendation in Co Springs...wondering about Mountaindale Cabins & RV Resort????????

Hope all is well with you.....paula

If you are Military the Air Force Academy has a very nice campground. They are located just off the highway on the north side of Colorado Springs. You won't be disappointed with their facilities. And a big plus is that they are usually nice and quiet. Except for the middle of the night coal train passing by. Sounds like a blackhawk helicopter overhead. But they move on. Seriously, it's a real nice spot. If you can get in.

Brake Controller Issues

As we were driving towards Cheyenne and Denver, we noticed our brake controller was not showing any numbers.....the trailer brakes seemed to work but we were concerned. A quick call to Uwe helped with a brake check but he suggested we stop in Ft. Collins to see Luke (Chromehome) here on the forums. We put in a call and Luke agreed to meet with us and recommended the KOA Lakeside RV Park in Ft. Collins. The location worked for us as we had business in Denver and Cheyenne so we were pretty centrally located and not far from Luke has his Airstream repair business.

Luckily we had a few days to check things out and this morning we were on the road again.....we drove away and a few miles later, we hear someone call Ed's name (PA system).....It was Luke and I had forgotten to lock the door......we were driving down the road with the door open......yikes....luckily, I don't think we did any damage to the door.....but our thanks to Luke for being available and willing to work on our issues.....(he seemed to be in the right place at the right time for us)

We highly recommend Luke (Chromehome) for any Airstream issues you might have. If you need a number, you can pm me.

Paula, we are at the Pueblo KOA for another night and then to Golden and Dakota Ridge RV Park. Lots of severe thunderstorms and flood advisories north of Colorado Springs tonight. I hope you don't get any hail—Denver to Ft. Collins is one of the worst areas in the country for hail.

It really rained hard here last night

We are backed up to what looks like a storm channel in the G arden of the Gods cg.i was worried there could be a flash flood, combined with my worry about hail made for a fitful night. We have two more nights here before heading to ok city. Was hoping to have wonderful weather before heading east. Luckily our trip from ft collins was uneventful.

The spectacular lightning makes bicycle riding a little iffy. Sorry to miss you. My husband wanted to see the Carmichael Training systems training facility here in co springs and I want to see Salida. Paula

Luke fixing stuff

We had a serious leak over the seat in the dinette that was revealed thanks to the daily thunderstorms we experienced in Ft. Collins. I was able to observe the place where the water was coming in, which varied depending upon whether the vista view window cover was open or closed....that led Luke to check the awning rail and viola, he could see a hole there that he was able to fill with vulcrum using a popcicle stick.......honestly....I kid you not....I don't want to reveal too much to reveal Luke's secrets but we could have caulked the windows from here to dooms day and it would not have stopped the leak....after last night's deluge we know that that hole was plugged.....here is a photo
