Blackwater falls was a perennial favorite of mine as a child. I haven't been since the late 1980s but it still carries a strong positive memory for me. We used to stay at Canane Valley on friends private land during that time. This was about the time the first resorts we're going in so I have no ability to comment on how built up it is now. Back then though, it was best classified as "heavily accessible wilderness" with the wilderness component preservation bent sought by the community.

We spent a month in the area last summer, in Parsons, WV. We stayed at a really nice campground, (5 Rivers Campground)......really nice people, and the river is beautiful. We wandered around the general area for the month, enjoyed the farmer's market, and especially a small town of Thomas, a few miles north of Parsons.
There is a small grocery store, in Parsons. It's great area, and we hope to return some day soon.
Canaan Valley is a very nice area, and if you are a hiking enthusiast, you've got to check out the "Dolly Sods Wilderness Area", just south and east of Canaan Valley. Dolly Sods is spectacular......is you are there in July, there are many meadows full of wild blueberrys to pick, and if you are there in October/November, be sure to check out the cranberry bogs, there are a lot of them up near the north end..

Years ago I used to whitewater kayak a lot, every weekend etc. and Blackwater area was one we hit a lot. The campground was wonderful, right on the river, but no hook ups as I remember. The people we went with were like us, "kayakers", run hard all day, drink hard and sleep in late, camped in vans or tents and off we went to the next river. Not sure how it is now.

If you are looking for full hook ups in WV, a nice place, water etc and a Resort. Try Stonewall Jackson Resort in Roanoke WV, NOT VA. Great place, some sites on the water, marina to rent pontoon boats, or small fishing boats, resort fee covers free kayaks and canoes. Nice sites, some 50AMP some 30AMP, nice clean rest rooms and across the lake a full service very nice restaurant if you want to eat. They used to be a customer of mine when they opened and my wife and I spent a lot of time there.

Very nice WV state parks

Sorry for the delay. Have been at Cannan more recently . Very nice. O hear of recent improvements at Black Water. Most WV state parks are quite nice. Not too far away is Coopers Rock near Morgantown. If you need any further assistance PM me. I live in the area. Again sorry it took so long.

We had never been to W VA til this past Saturday. Always heard it is a beautiful state. We are full-timers and decided to volunteer at Stuart Recreation area for a while and hope to see all the wonderful sites. If in the area please stop by.

If you're in that area be sure to visit Seneca Rocks WV. A spectacular mountain. Ordinary hikers can scramble to the top of North Peak and watch the rock climbers on South.
