Mt. Rushmore

I’ve stayed at the KOA & Horsethief Lake Campground (Not Horsethief Resort, that’s is a totally different place). KOA was close enough and kept my kids occupied, no complaints other than a little pricey & tight spaces.
Horsethief is the closest campground to Mt. Rushmore & very convenient. It is a US Forest Service Campground & less than 2 miles from Mt. Rushmore. It was tight also, but more wooded rustic feel with a nice lake within walking distance. With no kids I would shoot for Horsethief. We just showed up and got a spot if I remember correctly, no reservations. Those are the only two campgrounds I can speak of. Safe travels!

I would have loved to have been there last night also!

When we went to Mt. Rushmore last year we didn't camp, as we were traveling through. They had a special parking area for trailers and RVs and were guided into our spot against a curb by a nice young man. It was a short walk to the visitor center from there.

We stayed at Rushmore Shadows RV Resort two years ago for several nights. Convenient to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, etc.

We stayed at Creekside Mountain Resort last year. It is a small (15 sites) full service park centrally located and reasonably priced. If you are a Passport America member, the first night is half price.

We enjoyed Rafter J-Bar Ranch Campground. It was easy to get to all the local destinations from there, and it's located adjacent to the George Mickelson Hiking & Biking Trail.

We stayed in Custer State Park. Beautiful country with lots to see and it is a short drive to Mt. Rushmore.

We stayed at Keyhole State Park which was actually closer to Devil's Tower. We did the tower in the morning and Mt. Rushmore that afternoon.

If you can get into Custer state park, do it. Otherwise we were in a camp ground right outside Custer state park and really close to the city of Custer which was convenient for getting laundry done as well as restock on groceries. We full time and were there for a week or so.

How were the spots? We're staying there next month for 4 days while we explore the area. Looked like a nice campground.

Here's another vote for Rafter Bar J Ranch. It's huge, has several areas for camping, and I can't imagine it's full, except maybe last night.

Centrally located to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer, and a WalMart near Rapid City.

There's five different areas. Some are more wooded than others. I was close to the office. Flat pull through, some trees, table, level gravel. Full Hookups.
It was "Base Camp".
I liked it, I'd go back.

We were way in the back, in a back in spot. It was quiet and very easy to get in and out. Plenty of room between sites.

I’ve been to Rafter J Bar twice now, it’s awesome. Stay in “Ranch Camp”. Way better than the other sites, the only one that feels like you are in wilderness but with full hookups and a really clean washroom. We plan to go back.
