1969 LandYacht battery problem
Hello Everyone,
I have a 1969 27 LandYacht. I was getting ready for a weekend trip last night when I smelled melting wires... After following my nose for about 30 minutes I found a melted part connected to the positive battery cable. The Positive battery cable comes off the battery and then is connected to this part. It appears to be some resistor or something. I have had this trailer for about 4 years and have not had problems with the battery before. Does anyone know what this part is for? It is about 2 inches by 1 inch with 2 connectors on it. I am assuming I cannot just bypass it?

A photo would help tremendously. Did you check the 2 wires that come from the little part and see where they go to? That would help also.

I left the part in my car so I can't take a picture. I did draw one and attached it. The part was melted on the side away from the battery.

Looooooody, I have no idea what that thing might be. If there are absolutely no other wires (currently or formerly) connected to it, I'd guess it must be some kind of aftermarket current regulator. Have you tried just doing without it? Might want to check things out with a VOM first ...

Looks like a circuit breaker to me.
But then what do I know.

Thanks for trying.
Since it melted I was worried about hooking up the wires without it. I was just wrapped in black tape and stuffed back behind the battery so I suppose it could have shorted against something back there. I am going to stop at my local RV store and ask them what they think, thanks again for the help.
I spent last summer fixing all of the plumbing problems I guess this summer can be the electrical ones.
Is there a good place to get ahold of a wiring diagram for a 1969 27' landyacht?

The page Circuit Breakers and Fuses
has pictures of various circuit breakers and fuses. You might see your dohicky here.
Also, you could install one of the pictured devices as circuit protection on your battery connection.
