Thinking of an Airstream
So glad I found the site. My wife and I are giving a good deal of thought to the pruchase of a new or perhaps used Airstream. We live in Laguna Hills in Southern California and I my tow vehicle is a 2003 F350 SWD 7.3 PowerStroke Diesel. Can't wait to puller home!

Welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of info here. It's best to start by reading what's already posted on a particular topic. Your tow vehicle should be great for any of the trailers in the airstream lineup. Again, welcome.

Hi John -- and welcome to the Forums! We have plenty of diesel fanatics (and I have become one) who say more is better. You're GREAT in that department. Harshness of suspension is an issue when you have a one-ton truck. ST ( special trailer) tires are usually max rated at 65 mph, so holding down speed will definitely hold down road shock. Balancing the trailer's running gear (axle + wheel + tire) is important -- things shouldn't bounce off your countertop as you're running down the road. The search function here can be great but you have to try a variety of search words before you get the hang of it.
What length Airstream are you thinking about?

JBCrete2,
Welcome to another Orange County member. I hope you find what you are looking for soon and can join us for a few rallies.
El Camino Real Unit has one coming up in October in Borrego Springs and in September a caravan to Zion.

Welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us.
Your tow vehicle can handle any Airstream, so the choice is yours. We have a 25' FB and love the layout for two. We just completed a 42 day trip out west, and we were very comfortable and never felt crowded.
Go by your nearest Airstream dealer that has a good stock of Airstreams and spend the day checking out the various floorplans. Even if you have decided to buy used, this is a good way to start.

Welcome,
How much Airstream you end up with will depend on how many people are travelling and how long you are planning staying out. I am full timing right now in a 31. Find a length that you like and go one size bigger.

JBCrete2,
If you'd like to learn more from active Airstream owners, plan to visit the California Streamers Summer Rally at Pyramid Lake on July 20-22. Saturday would be the best day to catch everyone around. http://www.airforums.com/forums/cale...-20;&e=353&c=1
This is a terrific group with lots of experience and opinions that they will be happy to share with you. Visit once and I'm sure you will want to join in the future rallies too.

Thanks to you all
WOW....Never felt more welcome anywhere. I paid particular attention to the post about my 1 ton truck transmitting road shock to the trailer. Any way to dampen the shock?

Many members do tow with 1-tonners quite successfully. Others raise this caution. Newer Airstreams have heavier frames and I'd probably worry less about those.
I couldn't recommend air ride hitches between your truck receiver and hitch ball -- there's a lack of first person reports and I recall somebody using it who thought it flexed a lot.

Hi and welcome!
You got the truck. Now to pick the trailer...
Come on up and visit at Pyramid you can see all the trailers. You'll see more trailers ar a rally than at any dealership. Come up on Sat and get in on the Mini Golf turny, Water balloon battle and the potluck. We'll be looking for you.
P.S. Rent something and come up for the weekend. We'll welcome you no matter what you show up in.
Milo

I’ve been towing Airstreams for twenty-four years, twenty-one of them with pretty stiff suspensions. My present truck is a ¾ ton but it is very stiff. I’ve had no issues that I can attribute to the heavy-duty suspensions. However, I am a pretty conservative driver and seldom exceed sixty-five mph (especially since fuel has become so expensive). I don’t think I’d worry too much about it. Just be sure to take the time to correctly set up the hitch and use your best judgment on speed/road conditions, etc. Happy towing!
