New to forum but not to Airstream & looking for help

Hi,

Tried to make my first post a couple of hours ago, but don't think I got it done right. Another newbie!!!

Am new to this forum but have had Airstream for 15 years. Had a '75 & now have had an '86 Excella 32' twin since 1999. In last 18 mo. we've had couch & dinette reupholstered, new carpet & my wife made new drape for the front area & is now working on the back. In the process we're going to replace the bumper pads next to the beds. They've been done before & the panel material they are mounted on needs to be replaced. Have been lurking the site this pm looking for what others have done. Someone suggested panel board available from auto upholstery supply store. At this point I think that will be my best option. Any other ideas?

The "bumpers" backing is actually a thick cardboard, making it easy to curve with the walls. We just covered them with a "leather look" fabric, with a fabric glue and re-screwed them to the walls.

I'll look to see if I have any pictures. Made a fantastic improvement to the look of our bedroom area.

Ours have a cardboard core as well - but not corrugated cardboard. It's some kind of chipboard - a paper product - sort of like mat board used in picture framing. It's firm but bendable. We actually sewed through ours when we redid the upholstery.

Corrugated boards crush and can develop creases over time......

We found the wall a bit cold to the touch when sleeping. I used 1/4" Plywood (luan) and some 1/2" foam. Then covered it with a fabric. Cut it 1 foot longer and wider than the luan, fastened it with 1/4" staples (with an electric stapler) about every 4".

I used the original cardboard and put some cotton batting between it and the new material. I used a suede drapery material that matched my upholstery. I have the double bed on just one side in the back, so it is always left down and made up as a bed. I used 3M spray adhesive to attach the material to the back of the original cardboard and then re-screwed the piece back to the wall. Very easy fix.
