Talking New from Texas!

Finally bought a 1964 Tradewind double 24’ airstream project. We had her home for 3 days now. Scared and extremely excited to start this adventure. Looking forward to talking to all of you and picking your brains. Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to the neighborhood. A 64 Tradewind is a sought after vintage Airstream. Lots of room and a neat design. The outside seems to be in great shape. Looks like you’ve got a carport to work under. What are your plans? Renovation? Shell on reno or shell off? Get a game plan, take lots of current pictures and don’t throw ANYTHING away until finished. Good luck and enjoy.

Well, I'm old from Colorado: Welcome to the vintage Airstream hobby. Like Bubba L mentioned, the sixties Trade Wind is a very desirable vintage Airstream. I had a 66 Trade Wind. It had the same bath design as yours does. But mine had those Corning frameless windows used from 66 to 68. Nice looking, but prone to leaks. It was a twin bed layout. I renovated my trailer by fixing floor rot, replacing the axles, new plumbing, rebuilt the bath, new appliances, and many other repairs and upgrades. It was a very nice travel trailer. Sold it for another project trailer. Here are some photos of my old Trade Wind. I figured you would be interested.

The Airstream enthusiasts in these Forums are a great bunch and offer lots of good advice and information. I might suggest you start a "project thread" in the Airstream Knowledgebase, Airstream trailers, found close to the bottom of the Forums page. There you can find Trade Wind, and then your year range. Start a project thread there and you will find folks following along with your activities. It takes many hours (like a 1000) to renovate a vintage Airstream. But great fun in my view.

Hope to see you around here.

David

Thank you! The plan right now is to remove everything inside including the inner skin. We want to replace subfloor and restore frame with shell off. Nervous about taking the shell off but I am determined that we will do a great job. I checked out your project and it is NICE!!!

Glad to hear you plan on a shell off. A pain in the butt but the opportunity to get everything right. A shell off is not rocket science. You shouldn’t have any problems. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck and enjoy.

New from Texas!

That looks like a beautiful original Tradewind with a very nice shell.
We have a 66 Tradewind and love it. We have been able to camp in it continuously for the 12 years we have owned it except for the one year we took it out of service to paint the frame, replace axles and brakes, repair flooring, install insulation and a new belly pan.

We are headed to Texas in a week or so. I will be doing some work on our son’s 78 Caravanner. They are in the Fort Worth area.

Welcome to the family. We are here to help.

Dan
