Sticky Subfloor

I'm replacing the flooring in my 1968 Overlander. When I pulled up the vinyl that used to be there it left behind the adhesive paper. Once I scraped that off it left behind the adhesive. Now my subfloor is a sticky mess. Any suggestions on how to get the adhesive off or at least cleaned (everything that came in contact with it is now stuck to the subfloor)?

The new floor going in is click-lock vinyl plank.

Thanks!

Hi

Sometimes it's easier to turn this into a mess than to get it off

I'd try a little bit of each of the usual solvents and see what works. No big soak the floor stuff. Just try each of them in a small area. Acetone would be the first on my list, but not for any good reason. With any solvent study up on it's issues. Ventilation is needed with all of them.

Thanks for the suggestion but I think trying to sand it would just would just bung up the sander with the glue.

I'm planning on putting some kind of paper down before the planking but the hurdle I need to pass first is that debris has gotten stuck in the adhesive on the subfloor now so it's not level any more. I need to at least get the debris off before I can put the paper down or it will be all lumpy.

Hi

One way to get a list of things to try is to see what's in the application specific cleaners:

http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawe...9lxtD7SSSSSS--

The end of the MSDS lists the various solvents. Each one by it's self is way cheaper than the 3M product. You will use a lot doing a floor so cost does matter.

Hi everyone,

First of all thanks for all the helpful suggestion.
I wanted to let you all in on what ended up happening. I used 1:1 parts white vinegar and hot water and scrubbed away small sections at a time with a coarse scrub brush. Once it was loosened I scrapped up the stuck debris with a scraper and then wiped it all down to remove the excess liquid. It took some time and elbow grease but worked like a charm. The glue remained (less sticky now) so I immediately put down a 6mil plastic under-layment. I was planning on paper but the plastic was on hand. i tried to post before and after pics but I'm having a hard time uploading photos. Maybe later.

Hi

Looks like it did the job. Congratulations on the good pick of solvents.
