Consider this:
Threading into aluminum opens up a new can of worms since it's much softer than steel so therefor I would be concerned about screws (floor) stripping out or bolts deforming the aluminum, just a thought.

It would be ill advised to upsize your axle capacity. You are correct that they would be too stiff. Colin Hyde is an excellent source of axles. He can help you size appropriately, and can order in increments of weight capacity that are not available to standard Dexter axle dealers. He can also help you decide if you want to change the degree of the torsion axle which can give you a little higher stance than original.

It looks like someone put an incredible amount of time and money in your Airstream so far. Good luck!

I decided on 5200lb axles just because I know my build will be heavy. I also like the idea of having that breathing room knowing I'm not pushing the limits on my axle ratings.

Tires? Don't ask me. I bought Chinese tires. But really, if I have issues I'll be going with something American.
