Paula and I also have reservations for Grants on Oct 1. Not sure which direction we are coming from because the trip is unplanned at the moment.

We Rode the Cumbres and Toltec a couple years ago. We loved it. Make a day of it and take the whole trip. We stayed at a nice RV park a few miles west of Antonito. Drove to the depot and caught the train the next morning. We rode the train to Chama and took the Bus back. We got back around dinner time. It is a very scenic ride with varied terrain. I would rate it above the Durango-Silverton, but they are both very worthwhile. I would definitely recommend not missing it.
Regards,
Ken

It looks like I may have under estimated the number of folks overnighting in Grants. I am looking forward to meeting everyone at the KOA.
We will be caravaning across I-40 on Thursday. I believe Don and Gail (Motoman) will be in Williams the night before. Jan and I will be joining Thursday morning in Flagstaff. We will be waiting at Little America (truck stop) which is located just East of the I-17 junction on Butler Ave, just South of I-40.
Keep watching this thread for more details!

Rodney, rode the train about 2 years ago from Chama to Antonito. The last two weeks in September are a good target date - fall color in the high country should be at peak. The train from Chama is a double header up to Cumbres Pass. Only a single engine is needed for the remainder of the trip. Best fall color is from Chama to Osier (lunch stop). From there you can change trains and go back to Chama or continue on, past the Toltec Gorge, to Antonito. From the Gorge to Antonito it is out on the grass lands and not too photogenic.
The locomotives are coal burners so be ready to get dirty! You can also photograph in the Chama railyard!

We are new to this great Hot air Balloon extravaganza and are REALLY excited to be joining the Airstream group. We’re pulling our 30’ shiny trailer from Southern CA. Thanks so much for all the information posted. After reading the other comments, we just made reservations for the night of October 1st at the KOA in Grants NM.
Can’t wait to meet everybody,

It will be nice to meet you. We will be in Grants also. We haven't determined the nights leading up to Grants yet.
It will be odd to have another Roxie(y) in the group.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Arkansas in our '68 Overlander from Northern California (Eureka). We saw this thread regarding the baloon fiesta and were wondering if it's too late to get in on the fun? We'll be travelling south to Bakersfield and then hook up on I-40 for the trip across to Arkansas. We'd like to join you folks along the way, but we're not sure how to go about it. You see, this is our first trip ever in our Airstream. Thanks for any help you can give.

I think we're pushing 20 coaches at the Grants KOA (and one SOB...us!)
Mike & Roxy: Fellow CCCers! We'll be looking for you in Grants as we travel from Telluride with SuzyQToo (they are the folks we surprised at the Airstream Park in Minnesota if you recall from my travel blog).
Ken: We woke up to rain this morning at a funky yet friendly park near Albq (Turquoise Trail)....Jim, Tucker & I are heading to points east....
