Two Weeks from Everywhere Spring 2014
I'm glad to see that the internet (and AirForums) is still here!
Here's the deal. I've kind of dropped the ball on a few things lately, and picked up the ball on some others, but something that needs to get rolling again is:
Two Weeks from Everywhere Spring Rally 2014.
I've found out from a few people there is some interest in having a rally the weekend of Easter, Good Friday makes an excellent travel day. The weather is going to be phenomenal in Louisiana in April and we're wondering who else might be interested.
Here's the plan.
What: Two Weeks From Everywhere Spring Rally 2014
When: Easter weekend - April 18 - 20, 2014
Where: within a two hour drive of Alexandria, LA. There are several parks, Corps Campgrounds and State parks in the vicinity (even east Texas) that merit a visit and we're planning on visiting them. Some of you might even remember the "World's Slowest Caravan" idea I threw out last fall.
We'll plan this out. I'll take ideas on where to have it (Must have electricity and water and a reservation system). I'll give a few days to take ideas, and then we'll announce the location soon.

Chicot State Park is good. So is Lake Bruin State Park. I've stayed at both— Chicot for Christmas 2012, and Lake Bruin for Mardi Gras 2013.
Between the two, I preferred Lake Bruin. The campsites along the water's edge have private boat docks, which made it perfect for launching my inflatable kayak. However, I had zero bars on both my AT&T telephone and my Verizon jetpack, so I was completely cut off from electronic communications. I never turned on my television while I was there, so I don't know about TV reception.
At Chicot, I stayed in the South Loop because I had heard that it was better. I'm not so sure. The electrical service was on the curb side, not the street side, so I had to snake my cord underneath my Airstream to hook up. The water connection was exactly 26 feet behind my campsite, and I only had a 25-foot hose at the time. I didn't have a toad at the time, either, and didn't want to break camp to drive my Interstate anyplace that I could buy a hose. Luckily a fellow camper loaned me a 10-foot hose to give me a 35-foot reach so I could hook up. North Loop would have also been closer to the lake, but since I didn't have my kayak with me, I didn't miss that, much. I do wish the Louisiana State Arboretum had been a closer distance to walk, though. Next time I go there, I'll take my toad, and I'll drive to the arboretum so that I have more time there to enjoy it.
Put me down as tentative for attending this rally, for now, regardless of venue. I'm trying to save as much of my leave time as possible. Since I'm retiring at the end of the year, I don't have to take my use-or-lose leave, but can cash it out at the end of the year instead. One day's leave taken during the year gives me one day's worth of camping, but one day's worth of cashed-out leave pays for several days' worth of post-retirement camping later. But I should be able to earn some compensatory time between now and then so I can take off Friday the 18th without dipping into my use-or-lose leave.

I am very interested in attending this rally. Lake Chicot sounds good to me. Maybe 1.5-2 hours from home.
It is a nice park.

A few miles north of St. Joseph, right along the Mississippi River. Lake Bruin is an oxbow lake formed when the river changed course.

Just to be clear, I was talking (writing) about Lake Chicot in Louisiana, not in Arkansas. Might be more than a couple hours from Greenwood, since it's about 3 hours from New Orleans.

We are definitely interested.
I would vote for the south campground if we are going to Lake Chicot.
The south loop is older, hookups are not always ideal, but the north loop is like a large parking lot with little privacy between sites.

Where is Lake Chicot in Louisiana?
I know we've had this conversation before.
I have a déjà-vu feeling about it.
Depending on which direction it is from New Orleans- I think it is only 5 hours from Greenwood to New Orleans-
Wait a minute- I'm not sure we get "good Friday" off-
Good Friday- they're all good aren't they?

A few miles west of I-49 and just north of the town of Ville Platte. I estimate it would be about a 5-hour drive for you from Greenwood.
Lake Bruin, on the other hand, is about a 3-hour drive for you, 2½ hours for mgriffus, and 3½ hours for me.

It looks like lake bruin is out for the spring rally. According to the state park reservation website there's only four sites open.
Chicot state park has most sites open in loops A and D (south campground) and many open in north loop.

Vacation goes from hire date anniversary- June 15.
15 days vacation - 1/2 day for a funeral
14 1/2 days - 4 days for a rally in Texas
10/2 days - 2 days in Biloxi
8 1/2 days - 3 days for Canopener
5 1/2 days - 1/2 day for air show at Columbus Air Force Base, camping at Dewayne Hayes April 4, 5, 6
5 days - 5 days for rally at Lake Tiak O'Khata in Louisville, MS April 22, 23, 24 and Yocona Ridge, George Payne Cossar State Park April 25, 26
0 days-

Y'all have fun, and watch for lab mixes at Chicot....this is where we found our abandoned Miss lily.
We won't be able to make this, but hope to see you in October. (Hint, hint, hint Matt.)

If you've settled on Chicot, pick a loop in the south campground, and we'll start making reservations in that loop. If anyone is going to need the bathhouse, I recommend sites 5-19 on Loop A. That puts you reasonably close to one. Since the dump station is also on the way out of Loop A, it's convenient in that regard as well.
For what it's worth, last time I was there I stayed at Site 10 on Loop A.

They are generous on funeral time- for immediate family you get 2 days-
That half day was for a non family member so it counted against my vacation time.
They will let me leave at 3 or 4 any Friday afternoon I am going camping. The owner has a motor home and likes to camp, too.

Maybe we can make the October rally.
So far we have planned a trip to the mother ship and a tour of Tennessee, Ohio, and Indiana September 12-19, 2014 and rally at Salmon Lake Park in Grapeland, TX in October, 2014 and a rally at Lake Tiak O'Khata in Louisville, ms in April 2015...

Just thought I would toss another site out for people to think about. Poverty Point Reservoir State Park in Northeastern La. Does anyone have any first hand reports about it? I have not been to the park, but did go to the Poverty Point mounds and it is a pretty awesome place.
I looked online and their seems to be plenty of Premium sites available April 18-20. Don't know how many trailers will attend, but there is a small loop with 5 sites available that weekend.
Any and all comments welcome. Hope it's not too far for anyone.

About a 4½-hour drive for me pulling my toad via I-55 and I-20, 3¾ hours not pulling my toad. Doable.
Shade is sparse to nonexistent for all campsites, so if one is going to go, April's not a bad time. Come late May or later, it will be too beastly hot. No sites have lake frontage, but I can live without that since it's only a weekend trip.
Small loop is mostly Improved sites, no sewer. The larger loop is mostly Premium sites with sewer hookups.
