Hot Deal - Propane - Tractor Supply
Tractor Supply sells propane by the gallon ( not the # ) and only charges for the amount your bottle takes to fill up. Not the # rating on the bottle regardless of how much is in the tank like most places
This makes it possible to top of a bottle and only pay for what you need.
Best deal I have seen on RV Propane. By Far.

Liquid Propane weights 4.2# per gallon. Most locations use scales to tell if a bottle is full but the price is by the gallon? Is this correct? A 30lb propane tank should contain 7.14 gallons of liquid propane when full
30lb/4.2=7.14

Hot Deal - Propane - Tractor Supply
I’ve only had the experience of paying for propane by the pound. They weigh your tank before they fill, then fill, and calculate the difference (weight added).... add X lbs to your tank and you pay for X lbs...

Tractor Supply near me is $2.79 per gallon
The local Ford dealer (and RV) and Costco are both $1.70 per gallon.
It pays to shop around

Propane tanks can not be filled to capacity. Expansion space is needed.
On the road, I have seen both, sold by weight and sold by gallon.

Tractor Supply
The two Tractor Supply places I frequent fill by gallon yet the tank is placed on a scale. I've always seen them looking from tank to gallon indicator and stop when the OPD valve shuts the tank off. They are the lowest of two towns I frequent or live in. The local welding shop charges a handling fee that I refuse to pay anymore.

We try to buy our Propane from Costco - not all Costco's have them but our Tucson Costco on Costco drive does and it is always good value. A quick Google map search will let you know if your local Costco has Propane or not.

Here is what I don't understand.
You own an Airstream.
Don't sweat even if it cost $10/lb.
You didn't buy an AS because it was cheap.

Not all Airstream owners are rich.
Some just loved Airstreams and spent their disposable income to have it.
Others might have purchased a Used Airstream and put a lot of sweat and heart into it.
I'm thinking you said this with your tongue firmly in cheek?

Because some of us worked hard for our money and want it to go as far as we can make it go...Because we have other things to spend it on.... and so on...

Hot Deal - Propane - Tractor Supply
You don’t get to have enough money by spending lots of money.
My dad worked for the dude that invented the fork lift truck. He sold out to Caterpillar and was their biggest stockholder. He and his wife ate lunch as a casual meal at home. When they were done eating, the paper napkins they used for this meal, if not heavily soiled the napkins were folded up to use again.
It was a habit from the early days, when his wife cooked all their meals and they had very little money. Wonderful people, treated us like family. They had money, because they didn’t spend it frivolously.
My dad saw his boss write a check for $250,000 (back in the 70’s) to buy a new 70 foot yacht. The guy was well known, but looked like an “average joe”.

My ACE hardware charges 14.99 for a 20 # tank, but they are so close and my TSCs are further away and charges more.

"Squeezing a nickel until the buffalo poops in your hand"
Is a hobby for some people - and there are usually 10 alternative ways to spend every dollar.
I literally cannot taste the difference between generic butter and Land o Lakes... duh! A buck in my pocket to buy locally raised eggs from real "yard" chickens that laid them yesterday or this morning - wow - fresh! Stand up firmly when cracked and peel cleanly when making deviled eggs, and taste yummy.
It is easy to go too far in either direction. No "John Wayne" toilet paper for me. (It's rough, it's tough, and it don't take no sh** off anyone!)

Hot Deal - Propane - Tractor Supply
The old joke in the military is that the supply system mixed up the NSN for “toilet paper” with one for “sandpaper”. And never bothered to fix the error.

Don't confuse FILLING propane cylinders (a safety concern) with CHARGING for propane (a business matter).
For safety, fillers may fill upright cylinders by volume (by opening the little spit valve) or by weight (by using a scale). Again, this has nothing at all to do with what you pay. It's merely to make sure that no cylinder is overfilled (a dangerous condition).
As a business matter, many places charge by the gallon, using a gallon counter. Note that the gallon counter may NOT be used as safety mechanism for filling. It's merely there to figure out what to charge people for the propane they purchase.
Here's the handout about propane filling and charging for a workshop at last summer's international rally:

Eubank is right about the filling vs charging for propane. On the physical side, only the portable tanks can be weighed. On motorhomes like mine, the 20 gallon tank is mounted to the frame so they can only charge by the gallon. My gage on the tank is mostly correct but I have never run it empty for a total fill.
Plan to pull it out of storage in April and run my propane generator for exercise and to empty the tank before a fill up.
Eubank - Is your generator gas or propane?
