And so the renovation begins

This story begins last spring when my wife and I took delivery of our 1985 Soverign. One of the first things we did was remove the existing Gaucho and replace it with a better fold out for our two kids to sleep on. That idea didn't work out as well as we had planned so at the end of last summer we decided to do a major reno starting during the fall. Unfortunately I was unable to start really working on the trailer until about 4 weeks ago.

Here is what has been accomplished so far. All carpet, underlay, staples, backing board has been removed. the gaucho (sofa), side table, side storage and any other misc parts have been removed. We built three sections of the new wrap around bench. That project started 2 weeks ago. Since then I have had to modify the frames on the benches slightly, I've added the hinged covers, sanded sharp corners and screwed everything down. Now we need to find flooring we like, install it and hopefully be ready to go. The before pictures are what the trailer looked like when we got it last spring. Other projects for this year are to replace the kitchen counter top, sink & stove/oven.

My wife made brand new curtains for the entire trailer and cut new pieces of foam to use as mattresses at the back.

I will do my best to update as more and more projects get completed. Thanks for looking and all comments are appreciated.

I could have sworn that I had added pics and a description of the work that has been done so far. New flooring was added, The benches were finished off. At least to the point where they are very useable. I still need to do a little more detailing work to the vertical pieces of plywood but that will be later this spring. Other work to be done before this coming summer will be a new kitchen counter top, sink, faucets and hopefully oven/stove combination. Additional work will include upgrades to the bathroom, new skin on fridge, and maybe painting the interior. Here are some pics for now. The new layout at the front worked great for our trips we took last year. Each of our kids had their own space for toys, for bedding and for sleeping. Thanks for the interest and I will try to get some pics up before the end of the week.

I know I have started another thread somewhere but I thought I had better add some pics. The pics will speak for themselves with regards to what we have accomplished to this point.

Starting last night my wife and removed the cabinet doors, sink, faucet, oven and coutertop. We have a new counter, round sink and updated faucet that will be going in place before the end of weekend. Enjoy these pics too.

And when I find the other thread I will link this one into it.

Morning Tom.

If you are refering to the dinette cabinets, the frame is a mix of 2x4s and 2x2s depending on the position. The top portion is 3/8" plywood and the front pieces are 1/4" maple plywood. There is more work to be done and once we have completed our trips this year, I will be able to finish up on.

Thanks Tim. Actually I was curious about the original kitchen cabinets - are they solid wood in the Sovereign, or are they woodgrained particleboard?

Your dinette bears a striking resemblance to the one we constructed a few months back, except yours looks level, square, and professional.

How do you extend the door-side bed like that?

Since the kitchen counter on our unit is pulling away from the wall and we want to replace our double sink with a single, we may end up replicating your counter-work.

Tom, the cabinets themselves are particleboard but the doors are oak. At some point we will either refinish them or paint them. That is part of next years reno.

Thanks for the nice words. As far as the bed extender, I built just a small table with fold up legs. When not being used it fits perfectly in the shower.

Although not completely completed, I thought I would include some pics of the 90% finished kitchen reno. Since the photos I put the doors back on, cleaned up the counter and just did a little re-touching here and there. Enjoy the pics.

Hi Deb.

We found that sink at IKEA for about $30.00. It's nice and deep and doesn't take up nearly as much room as the old shallow double sink did. Thanks for the nice remarks. Since then I have replaced the belly pan forward of the wheels. But I will have to find that link and add it later. Hopefully during the spring I can redo the bathroom.

I looked back over your pics and noticed your oven, is it new? We are going to replace our entire kitchen and have been looking into the ranges. I was wondering if yours is the Magic Chef 22" with the SS oven door? If so, are you pleased with it? That Magic Chef is the one we're looking at, I can't remember the model number. I thought that if you had discovered something you didn't like about it, you might save us some grief later.
