Yakima Platform Rack on 24x

Installed this today.. very pleased with the outcome. This forum tech is a dinosaur so these two pictures are just upside down.

Nice addition - is the basic rack on the 24X able to support the weight of anything you add on roof? I recall the owners manual says those roof racks on 24X are not designed to carry weight.

Are those solar panels under it? Won’t that pretty make them unusable?

The rack is strong. In my opinion, this is simply AS legal winning an internal battle. It will carry weight.

The rack still allows some sun to hit this panel but yes it will be less. I will lose some wattage here but that’s a calculated trade off for the way I use the van. I drive most everyday between stops and always start with my batteries full from the alternator.

substantially, substantially less. any shadow on those panels, no matter how small will eliminate a complete row of cells as the bypass diodes kick in. In your case, the entire panel will be almost worthless.

It's not just AS legal winning the battle. The MB up fitter specs don't let you put all that much "high" in / on the van. Apparently AS has already used up the allowance with cabinetry / awnings / Air Conditioning and the like ....

One way to get some weight back would be to pull the solar panel.

Truth in lending: There is a spec on the rear door as well. The spare tire I have back there likely is just over the limit.

Nice rack, on the van I mean of course. I keep thinking about Fred Flintstone's car tipping over when the giant steak gets put on the window tray. Do not put a dinosaur steak up. there.
