Project 2000 Lube question

I’ve searched and found mostly answers to electrical issues with the step. My 2013 AI’s step is starting to show signs of its age…and possibly neglect. The manual speaks of lubricating the chain every couple of years.
I’ve crawled under there and what I see does not make me happy. Is there a trick to get to the lubrication points, or do I have to drop the whole assembly from the van?
I can see the chain when the step is out and I get my head in the right spot….but access is out of the question.
Anyone have a tip to share, before I brute-force my way ahead and disassemble the unit?
