Hello Streamer brothers & sisters,
I wish I had a great story to share along with my question. Not yet,sorry. I’m sort of a newbie. Haven’t been on any note worthy trips yet. I just returned from a quick trip up to the mountains near home here in Gilroy. I discovered that the trailer breaks don’t work. Even when I adjust the controller to max,no trailer breaks ? Was hoping for some help finding a good service shop near here (San Jose or Salinas area).

Any RV dealer can resolve a brake problem. There are several in the San Jose/Gilroy area. Several mobile RV techs as well. Problem is that the issue may be trailer, umbilical cable, controller or tow vehicle related.

The best solution here is to fix it yourself. Knowing how your systems work is golden. Not all of us have the background or skills required, but developing at least minimal troubleshooting knowledge is a very good idea for an RV owner.

I agree, An easy first test is to use the break away switch to see if at least the trailer components are working.
Next jumper 12 V to the brake lug on the trailer connector. See if they apply from the trailer wiring.
Next clean the connectors with vinegar and a bit of salt mixed in. Rinse well. Try to get a good connection.

If any of these fail write is back.

I plan to break my brakes and take a break, then after a good break, I will replace the broken brakes with new brakes. If my wife doesn't interfere with my good break, I would probably won't be able to replace my broken brakes. Now this is breaking my mind trying to find time to get off my break so I can fix my brakes.

Some days a guy just can’t get a brake around here.

After you take a break from the garlic if you’re able learning about your trailer brakes is a good thing as suggested.

If your comfortable diving in I think you’ll be surprised and benefit from the learning.

Everyone need tyo remember we're all been there and you learn by doing and listening.


I use a local shop (hitch pro and tow) and all they do is hitches, brakes and the like. Lots of RV's and horse trailers.


I did a yellow pages search and saw two that would work. Anybody that works on horse trailers know how to use a meter and can likely diagnose your issue.

I did. They could not fix my sub-woofer problem, or my screen door, or my main door and that's when I stopped them from touching my Airstream.

They work out of an 8 x 5 shed that holds their tools and use the parking lot as their repair area. No service building. Why Airstream allows this to happen is beyond me.

Oh gosh, thanks for all the great tips and a few laughs. Your right, Lurning about my trailer brakes is a must. I will do some testing. And,lean on the shop techs if needed.
