window frame pitting

I'm rebuilding my windows and I have some pitting on the frame. I tried 600 wet sand but it didn't do much. went with 400 but still not getting it. I don't want to crazy with the sand paper. what has worked for others?

Short of bondo and paint, deep pitting is a tough one. You could try filling the pits with solder and then sanding, but you'll still see speckles.
