"Due to record setting customer interests, Airstream sales figures are setting the world on fire".
"Airstream, let it spark your fires again".
"Nothing lights a fire like a shiney Airstream".
Airstream, light up your love life and your vista's".
Is this what is referred to as tone deaf. Poor editor, going to be some backlash for sure. This would be in poor taste even if not having had several seasons of horrible wildfires.

Clearly, nobody in their ad agency, marketing department or any of their executives who review & approve this type of thing have any first-hand experience with camping or RVing. Kinda makes you wonder who's in charge...

Maybe a case that a significant number of those customers, are totally new to camping (although are 'experienced' from the internet etc), and get sold on the image portrayed by fictional media, and who think reality is something on TV.

I'm just wonderin what tow vehicle Grizzly Adams pictured here is running?
Probably a electric Prius, with a "SuperSpecial hitch setup"

Yes, a bad example. On page 4 you can read "About the Cover". The shot was staged with 2 empty chairs and meant to pay tribute to the photographer's father and mother. It my belief that the fire and people were photoshopped into the picture. (I could be wrong as I have not had my vision checked in over a year.)

To be honest, I must admit I have often wondered this exact thought countless times regarding all things Airstream.

The fire & people are photoshopped into the scene (see page 4 about the cover)
Why not photoshop a Solostove and giant fire extinguisher. [emoji41]
Great boondocking site though.

Hans
You are very correct but it really doesn't matter much. (Not your statement but who publishes it) There is clearly a connection/relationship between Airstream and the magazine. Rich has many a good article in it but this cover misses the mark, badly and sends a irresponsible message.

Thanks for the correction Hans. Guessing Airstream may want to have words with Rich!
Bad PR image all around IMO.

This whole episode would be a great example to be cited in a mass communications ethics course for a whole host of reasons.
Beyond the obvious bad example regarding fire safety and wildfires, there is the larger issue of photo shopping reality. Truth is under a particularly curious and relentless assault at the moment; you see it everywhere even in Facebook postings where people try to curate their image to maintain good “PR“ rather than simply letting the more honest reality show through.
To be sure, Airstream Life is not a news medium, and isn’t necessarily subject to the same standards of manipulating photographs, but neither is it a fashion magazine where touching up the models pictures is routinely done (But even that practice is coming under ever increasing criticism itself).
I believe a rather bright and clear ethical line can be drawn for such publications where the use of Photoshop to correct and tweak a flawed picture is justified. But to use such a powerful tool to alter or create an alternate reality is inherently deceptive; indeed sometimes to the point where the deception is the aim or the intent of the photograph.
The magazine deserves a bit of credit for explaining and pointing out the deception on page 4, but wouldn’t it be better to avoid publishing such photographic fiction in the first place and elect to use genuine pictures that reflect the actual reality of living the airstream life?
