Friendly skies...er, roads.
I was reminising through many old family travel pictures and found THIS. The date on the slide is 1980. We lived in Nevada then and traveled and camped much of it as well as the southwest, AZ, NM, UTAH...so I am not sure where the pic was taken. Anyone remember seeing this? A lot of effort went into making it even if it is crude in places. I would loved to have seen the inside. Obviously I shot this while driving. I was heavy into photography then and probably because of the picture's poor quality I filed it away...never to be seen until now. Now is a good time to share.

That's funny! Next time I fly I'll have to look for the rear view mirrors up by the cockpit.

No, Bob, I think when you 'fly' next best to be sure there are WINGS.

Neil----Yes, I've seen it. It's definitely in my passive memory bank and can't pull up any details. Maybe at the Long Beach, Ca airport at a trade show? Automotive show? It was on static display and the interior was not available for viewing. Wish I could tell you more.

I must admit that had I seen that in the sixties or early seventies I'd certainly not remember. By the eighties I'd of thought it was flashbacks from the previous two decades and in the nineties I'm not sure what I'd of thought other than what does he have for a power train in that thing. I think if my neighbor parked that on his driveway I'd be wondering if he's gone back to the sixties.....

When I showed your pictures to a friend he said several years ago he saw somewhere on the net a humorous description of road kill and the picture they used was of that rig. He's going to see if he can find it again and if so I'll post it here. He said it was one of the funniest little blurbs he'd ever seen and was thankful for the reminder.

The Cosmic Muffin started life as a Boeing 307 Stratoliner, NX19904. Based on the B-17, it was built for a planned around-the-world flight for Howard Hughes -- canceled due to the start of WWII. Damaged in a 1964 hurricane, it ultimately wound up selling as scrap for $62. Parts of its fuselage were incorporated in a yacht named The Londonaire and renamed Cosmic Muffin after a 1994 rebuild. Interesting to see it still ... um... floating.

The Londonaire shell-off restoration in 1970. Looks like the axles are shot!
