honda generator replacement in 345

I know I saw pictures somewhere in here on replacing the kohler generator with a Honda EV6010 but can't find it. Last sunday we hosted a "boondock" party in our MoHo and the generator ran for about 3 hours. It started out fine and would run the microwave but you could hear the load hit it. We then were just running the overhead lights and the generator would run at a steady rpm for a while, then idle down and sound like it would die (but did not), lights would dim and then about 15 min later go back to stock idle and the lights would brighten. A one point it the rpm went way up and the lights dimmed again. We made it thru then night with it running. Our mechanic had looked at it a while back when the problem was it "disieling" after it ran for a while and we shut it down--at that point he said it was on its last legs. Any idea on the rpm situation and help with the link for the honda replacement? thanks

It sounds like you have either a field winding, or a brush in the generator itself that has one foot in the grave. Rebuilding it would probably cost more than it is worth, but I would get a second opinion from another mechanic before going out and buying another unit. They are expensive, andit would be bad to find out it was a loose connection somewhere.

I have an EV6010 in my 84 310. I could post a picture if you would like. I've never seen the generator compartment in a 345 so I don't know if they are the same size.

Here's a post in an old thread which mentions a good source for the EV6010.

unit size

they are smaller then the Kohler we have I thought I saw a post a while ago that showed someone moving it in with a forklift but have not been able to find it interestingly enough when I spoke with our RV mechanics about it they were more inclined to go with Onan?! The Hondas price out at about 3400. with mufflers etc right now thanks for the link

There is some information about this subject (along with Honda generator and generator compartment dimensions for a 345) on this thread:

thanks

that was the link I was looking for thanks Did you make your trip to Vegas yet? We had our "Thing" up at Pismo as our tow vehicle and it was a toss up as to whether the MoHo or VW got the most looks Debbie

Ha! Yes, to Vegas and back with only one minor mechanical (cracked header collector transition within 5 miles of home). I know what you mean about the looks. The classic AS/VW combination certainly garners a lot of attention.
