What is wrong with this website?
What is going on? This site has gone from really, really slow to really, really, really, really slow. The other day I could not access it because it was "too busy, check back later."
Getting painful to use. What gives?

Check out this thread. I think the other forums on this server are really busy.

I think we will all need to be patient over the next several weeks - I could not get on the chat site last night either - I got on early, logged off, then could not get back on.
Growing pains..............(thats a good thing!)

For the Mac/Safari users- if you watch the gray status bar at the bottom of the screen and click on stop when 1 item is left to complete it will show the page with pretty much everything loaded. If you want to post that is one of the last items to load and you will have to wait it out, but it is much faster to move around otherwise.

It's not just the server right now. There are also issues at the datacenter. Over the last year they have completely filled up the datacenter that was 30% full when we move over there last year. They are installing 15 new 1GB finber connections this week. There is some type of peering agreement that is causing major slow downs right now also...
I got the new server and it will be going into place in the next 2 weeks. So be patient...
FYI - It's not the new sites I bought, but a few of the other sites I have started. I will be optimizing the new server for the functions that are so processor intensive and that will level things out...
I'll have s back to instant page load times very soon. Sorry for the slow experience.

I was ready to start some much delayed home repair projects, now I see the Home Repair forum is not working.
Guess I should go back to bed.

What is really funny, is that during the day when I'm at work the baord is so slow it is not funny and we have a T1. I get home with dial up and it kicks butt !!

I temporarily shut down the travel forums & home repair forums.
I mmade some upgrades earlier this evening and will get the new server in place ASAP. There might be a few minor bumps, but smoother waters are ahead I assure you.

andy,
i noticed a considerable increase in speed this morning. thanks for staying on top of the situation.
are you planning on changing the format of the home repair forum? it looks like the majority of the posts are coming from other sources. email lists?
makes for some interesting reading!
some of those folks are downright nasty! after reading some of the goings on over there one truely can appreciate this forum!
keep up the good work andy!

John,
Those posts are part of the public Usenet newsgroups. I am pulling them in so I will have more pages to index in the search engines. I will be changing the forum structure on that site quite a bit.

I will be upgrading some operating system functions over the weekend. So we might have a few reboots. Basically I am trying to get our machine running faster until the fan for the second processor of the new server gets in. Then it will take the datacenter 3-5 business days to get that box setup. After that box is setup I will optimize that server with some OS tweaks to make sure we get the best possible performance.
Sorry for the downtime, I am learning as we go too.

John, thanks for noting the same thing I found when I pulled up the home repair forum. Stupid me, expecting something like TOH that I could learn from and enjoy. Whoa, didn't take me long to exit for good! Like you, I was immediately reminded of the quality AND fun of this forum. I don't think I am a prude, but, hey, it shouldn't go unsaid, thanks, all of you!
