Did anyone ever answer the OP's original question?
Weber.roger, first, you don't want to "get caught". Find out the laws of the state you are traveling to, or through, and abide by those laws. It's very easy to find on the interwebs... That darned Google knows everything. A weapon stored in your trailer will be different than one you can access... Study up on the differences. Find websites with facts on the laws, don't trust what a bunch of us wahoos on a trailer site to tell you about the law...
If you plan on carrying a pistol, which will work in a confined space much easier, and be easier to carry when you leave your camper, a concealed carry permit will help things tremendously. Florida, where I am from, has reciprocity with @ 40 other states. I can travel from FL to Michigan and not be illegal, with my gun tucked in my waistband, as long as I'm traveling I-75... There are quite a few websites that will list which states have reciprocal agreements with other states, and what qualifiers go along with them.
Be safe! Situational awareness will save your butt way before the gun ever needs to...
Dear Canada,
I love all of y'all! I'm so glad you are our next door neighbor. Come over for beer and steaks some time!
Sincerely, Red, actually having run and Coke with chili tonight, but you're still invited...

@ Panama Red
Thanks for the invite and like wise, if you ever cross the border my hand is extended in peace and friendship (just remember to leave the heat with your border guys).
I've never met an American I didn't like.
Cheers

Did someone say hunt?
We were up in central MN for the last 2 weekends for deer hunting.
I took a big bodied fork last weekend and my buddy got a big doe this weekend.
I bought my wife a license and she got drawn for a doe tag so she will go back up for the last weekend with me.
Hoping to get one more.
I shoot a Tikka T3 in .270
The fork came out with a doe so I put the scope on him and bang.
He dropped like a sack of potatoes.
Done
About 125 yds. EZ
Our AS never goes anywhere.
Just sits up at our land as a base camp for hunting and fishing.
Yes there's a hand gun in it - just as there is in half of the rooms in the house + basement, garage, pickup, etc.
A nice old S&W model 57 - blue 6" .41 mag.
My camping gun.
I am very good at inventing hidey holes and disguising places to stash them so they're right under your nose but you'd never suspect it.

I'm all archery hunting nowadays... Still a little black powder, but not much.

Between Florida and Utah, you can carry in almost every state that allows such activities. I personally like the Glock 19 which is a 9mm a little smaller than the Model 17 the full size. The 17 holds 17 bullets and the 19 holds 15. Lots of YouTube on these if interested.

The last gun I fired was an M1 in the military. Have not owned a gun in my adult life. Now I am shopping and have plans of getting professional instructions and training on the use and maintenance. I am 70 years old.

You can take the Glock 19 one step further to the Glock 26 (10 in the magazine, 1 in the chamber). This model is very concealable and suitable for an ankle holster. Additionally, the Glock 26 can seat the magazines from a 19 or 17. All three will seat the Glock 33 round magazine, making these small pistols "all day shooters".

But think of it like this: We all know people who are terrified of flying. The mental picture of falling out of the sky, screaming all the way down, is horrible. But the reality is, you are orders of magnitude safer in that airplane than you are driving your car to the corner store.
Carrying an easily accessible loaded gun (if not, why bother?) is statistically many times more likely to cause you harm than not.

The "Judge" is a handgun, it's capable of firing .410 shotun rounds, or .45 long Colt rounds.

Since the "Judge" loads like a pistol and looks like a pistol, I doubt Canada will suddenly consider it a shotgun at the border.
I second the thought posted somewhere above that a shortest legal barrel length double barrel shotgun with the shortest legal stock is about as simple as it gets when the operator is in a panic mode and accuracy with a shotgun is not too critical. In fact, an old one with hammers to pull back is intuitive where fumbling for a slide safety like on my Browning over/under might delay the needed activity.

So now that everything is clear as mud. How hard is it to buy ammo in other states when traveling? Here in Texas you can get whatever you want over the counter. Unless it's .22 rim fire. All the hoarders are keeping those hard to get. Any states out there with restrictive ammo rules. I usually travel with a couple of extra clips but in the future would like to tune up at the gun range every now and then while on the road.

I've seen gun stores everywhere I've been. And with online stores that sell ammo, and UPS Stores that will accept, I don't see the problem buying ammo.

It's ok -- when I block, its usually temporary, for 48-72 hours so I get over the impulse to troll; then unblock when I'm decent again. Welcome back!

I figure reasonable people can disagree about one thing or the other, and maybe even get a little mad, and then let it go.
Grudges suck, and all too often prevent people from appreciating common ground that they do share.
Usually points we argue about are fundamentally "big picture" closer than debate about details and semantics indicate on the surface. Sometimes civility can be salvaged when we simply agree to disagree.
Too often we don't talk long enough to get to this point.
Brevi tempore!
