Hello Jim,

I am associated with USMA. I am currently active duty. I have spent the last two years teaching at West Point.

Be careful if you venture to Red Top Mountain. Some of the roads are narrow with close trees. We ended up with a long scratch in the side because there wasn't enough clearance to make a curve in the road. All of the other campgrounds mentioned in North Georgia are great.

we had the same questions a while back...my wife and I searching for the same sort of getaway (we have 2 small children)...we did not see some of these particular recommendations as I did not narrow my search to only "Georgia mountains"....ill be trying some of these later for sure.

We ended up at Vogel...I have a thread on it by the way you can find...not all that informative really....but it was really lovely and had nice access to hiking trails, and not a long drive to Ocoee whit water rafting

For a 30 foot rig and a newb, it was was a very tight campground to navigate ill say that!

First we find all Georgia campgrounds good. Now this is a little south of where you may have in mind, but Indian Springs is wonderful. It is south of Atlanta 75 miles or so.

Fort mountain between Ellijay and Chatsworth is nice, somewhat steep road from the Ellijay side. Good sites, nice lake and lots of hiking trails

Just got back from Cloudland Canyon. Beautiful park with lots of trails to hike. No full hookups, but water and power. Stay on the West Rim. Lots more trees on that side. They do have grey water dumps throughout the park and a very nice dump station on the west side.
