Re Caulk My roof

I was at Jackson Center Friday and wanted to re caulk all the vents on my roof and talked to one of the techs in the service center and he said they use ADSEAL caulk . When I went back into the store to buy it it is now Silicone caulk and I always thought not to use Silicone on aluminum , always use a polyester sealant on aluminum . I'm wondering what others think of using silicone ? I didn't buy any yet . any help appreciated .

I, also, am due to do some recaulking. I am debating on using Silkaflex or Acryl-R for the joints where the white and Aluminum sections meet. I know the white is painted Aluminum. The sealant that was used is becoming "powdery" Should I try to remove the old sealant using a stick?

Here's an option I used....after researching and getting tired of using that messing caulking every year...I purchased the eternabond tape for seams, rivets and vents. Cut strips wide enough to cover rivets and seams and used on roof only. Good for 10 years and was easy to apply when following directions. So far no leaks and inspecting after a year it is in very good shape. Check out the web sight and video.

This ADSEAL CALULK is 100% silicone. This was recommended by "a Service" person at Airstream?....then, it was not available in their store? Lets talk about this some.

If you have ever tried to re-caulk where silicone caulk has been used, the answer would be obvious to you. Re-caulking over old silicone caulk takes a lot more effort because it is very difficult to remove the old. And, the new caulk over old is more likely to fail because of reduced adhesion.

I've used many different sealants working on boats (fiberglass and metal). Sikaflex is the way to go for sealants. Avoid silicone!!

Yes it was available in the store but I thought silicone was a no no on aluminum ,He had just getting done with a pressurized leak test and was resealing the leaks .

100% silicone Adseal is what is currently recommended for Airstreams.

I hate to tell you this, but new production Airstreams are now sealed with Adseal on the roof and only seal tape between the aluminum skins elsewhere. No more Vulcum lathered everywhere on the inside of the outer skin. If you want to reseal the roof later the old silicone just lifts and peels off almost effortless. Just ask lewster about clearing off my newly Adseal calked roof for new solar panels. I am not convinced Adseal is here to stay, but after researching the company in the UK they are a large company that is into all kinds off sealing supplies and techniques. Maybe so. When Airstream resealed my roof last fall, they had a cheaper well known roof sealant available, but this is the one they said will hold up to Texas weather the best. Time will tell, but if they have quit using vulcum , or an equivalent, skin repairs will be a lot easier during disassembly.

I also checked Adseal UK. I thought installing the rubber roof could be a good alternative to fixing all the leaks with Captain Tully and which ever calk is in vogue at this time.

What is the best way to get on the roof and will it hold you? I'm 190 and thinking may cause more damage than it's worth.

I am 205 and go on the roof regularly for inspection and routine maintenance.
I put a little tape on the door gutter so not to scratch.I then place my extension ladder against it and get on the roof.Only step on the frame braces easily distinguished by the rows of vertical rivetsDo not go out on either end caps.
I took a 2x12 and cut it 36inches long and covered it in a carpet remnant.I use it to span the frame braces for walking and a place to sit when working on the roof.
Simple and easy once u go up there.

Thank you for the information I'm gonna give it a try here in a bit, I'm going to get some ad seal and see what is going on. We've had some bad storms lot of rain I've had couple drips come in around vent hood I'm excited to check it out. Again thanks
