Refurbished International Plates

Here is a picture of what my results were after stripping off the old paint and repainting. It took a week to complete. I guess I should have taken before pics.

They look great!! How about sharing the method. I assume they are made of AL. Are those pins I see in the corners the way you remove them? What paint did you use?? Mine are pitted.

Items used -

1. Blue Paiters tape - to tape off areas to paint the blue and red.
2. Aircraft Paint remover - from walmart - in the automotive paint
area.
3. Testors Spray Paint
a. 1258 - Flat white
b. 1210 - Gloss Bright Blue
c. 1203 - Red

Remove paint with the remover..
!!!! Do this outside !!!!
Follow directions and get all the paint off.
Now I washed the plates with soap and water and scrubbed to make sure the remover was now removed.

Now Paint.

Before painting I used vaseline to grease the shiny plated areas to prevent any white paint from sticking on the lettering and the ridges.

1. White -

Full coverage with white paint and painted again within 3 hours. Let them set for 48 hours and paint a last time.
Allowed 18 hours to dry, well had no choice.. I had to sleep and go to work the next day.

2. Next I taped off the areas so that I could paint next color. The
blue and the red I only sprayed two coats within 3 hours and allowed 24 hours to dry for each color.

Now I just cleaned off the white paint and buffed up the shine.

Thats it... this is my result.

Believe me, I was pleasantly suprised.

Question? Did you remove the nameplates first or did you leave them on and mask around them. If you removed them, how - and how did you put them back on - rivets?

When I aquired my airstream, they were all missing except for the one that has make model serial number on it on the front of the trailer. I have been in search of these for a while.

I traveled to a destination in Florida, a RV Salvage yard, to get these plates. They were removed from a 73 tradewind if I am not mistaken. These plates were riveted to the TT in the corners. I noticed after they were removed that this was the way they were installed as there were no other holes beneath the plates.

The location where mine were removed, there are six large holes with some type of rubber grommet or similar piece with the stud still in .


So there ya go... I plan on attaching my plates this weekend.

Thanks for the prompt reply - we must have been "surfing" the site at the same time. Great job on the restoration...tempted to do my nameplates (though not International)soon.

I plan on trying to do something with those hubcaps... I wish I had a picture to show me what they looked like initially. The paint is faded to where you really cant tell what color it is. It looks about all grey now...

Anyone have an idea?

Ok...so since it has been over 3 years (figure that is enough time) have you by chance finished the hubcaps and have pics to share?

Yes it has been 3 years and I still have the AS. Since that time I have moved to Az. Because of the move, work has been haulted. I had thought that I may sell this one until I looked around and saw a lot of JUNK. I'll keep my own JUNK. The interior had been re-apholsted. And I just finished repairing ( not replacing) the last tombour door under the sink. A previous owner replaced many others. NOt an easy job. Tom
