Depending on the year, yes. The new trunnion bar knobs are larger and don't always fit old heads. Due to wear and tear they may.
Just for your info, new trunnions inserted into a new head will have appr 2-3 "free" up and down play, when not put under load .
I just went through replacing the trunnion bars from 1000# to 800# bars. According to Reese they were not supposed to fit the old 1993 head, but they did. Upon closer inspection of of the old head, i saw a lot of wear and decided it would be best to replace the head with the trunnion bars.
This involved getting a new hitch ball and torquing it to 450 pounds with 1 7/8 socket.
