It's been said, but you will get better gas mileage with a manual in the dodge. My father in law has a manual and my brother in law has the exact same truck in automatic and the manual gets at least 4 more mpg... both 3/4 tons 06' ..The only problem I have with it is, the gears are to low.. You never use first unless you have 10,000 lbs back there, and when in 6 th gear, if you hit 90 you are about red lining it..... Not that you need to hit 90 mph towing but just going down the freeway in the middle of nowhere is nice to cruse....

Most vehicles that I have checked the specs on, (most of those have been 1/2 ton), have a lower tow rating with the manual transmission. However, I think the limiting factor is the clutch, not the transmission.

Allow me to throw in my two cents…I have a 2007 Dodge 2500 4x4 diesel with the automatic transmission. I tow a 27FB International with NO problems at all. It’s hard to make this truck downshift on any of the hills in and around Tennessee. Mileage is good…15-17 when towing. So as to the question of auto or manual, I selected the automatic so that if for any reason, I should not be able to drive, my wife, who does not know how to drive a manual transmission, would be able go for help.

I like the idea of a manual transmission. Shifting it yourself is almost an expression of masculinity. SuEllyn just doesn't get it it.

Some how topic always strays. Stick shift and masculinity I do like the idea of holding it in gear, I hate when your almost to the top and then she drops 1 and holds it half way down the other side.

Shifty women
Donna specifically requested a 3/4 ton Hemi with a manual transmission... the rest didn't matter. She is a ranch woman and got used to the low first where you could start the truck and step out to throw stuff in as the truck idled down the path... I think you could do the same with automatic but there is no discussing the issue with her.

Don't know if dodge is doing it, but some automatics you can also manually shift... "Tundra" I have a Sequoia that is auto but going down hill or up, I can manually shift the gears as well, Makes it kinda nice....

I have driven each of the three big diesels with automatic transmissions. They are all nice to drive, lots of control - no question about it. For me it would depend how I used the vehicle. If it were a daily driver with the potential of a lot of stop/go I would opt for the automatic. If this vehicle were not used everyday - I would opt for the manual tranny.
