64 look
Thank you for the wonderful post!
I have a '64 overlander and your pics will be invaluable as we restore. We want it as original as possible.
After I get the b. water tank fixed I plan on replacing the toilet, etc. Great job!

Wow-- you have done an amazing job and I am jealous! That is precisely what I dreamed of when we were considering whether to purchase and restore a vintage unit or buy new. Your Airstream will undoubtedly be an inspiration to many!

My '67 Overlander has never been restored but has been in frequent use as a family camper for 48 years. The original refer has a 3/8th inch thick door gasket with a magnetic strip instead of the more modern 3/4 inch. I literally called all over the world trying to find a replacement including Dometic in Sweeden but no dice. I found a 3/8th gasket for a larger door in the flea market at DuQuoin International rally and was able to cut it down to fit, but it is not perfect. In a unit as old as yours, you must have had a need for a new door gasket. What did you do? I ask because I plan to pass the trailer on to my son and sooner or later it will need a new gasket again.

NoNameinNM, sorry you pulled the trigger so quick. It's for sale.
doctari: I didn't have to pull the shell on mine because it was in great condition and had almost no mice issues - a little in the belly pan, but just insulation which I replaced. If you search for my handle - robwok, I documented everything I did replace - axles, tires, 7 way, hot water tank, all the holding and supply tanks, toilet, dump valves, etc. I plan on taking a video as there are several things that don't show in the pictures that well. For example, since I had the belly pan open, I added wires and LED lights at the stairwell, underneath, and in the bumper trunk and rear compartment, so if you go to hook up your dump stuff at night, you flip a switch and everything is extremely well lit and easy to see.

Oh, if you only knew... it was at least a dozen years before we actually "pulled the trigger" and even then it was a dream of several decades. We left the Vintage Trailer Academy in May of last year having realized that we would pass on restoring a vintage unit and instead buy a new or used late-model Airstream instead. And then we waited almost a year before actually ordering ours!
Still, if I had the cash laying around, I'd be on my way right this minute! It's absolutely gorgeous and I'm sure the next owner(s) will treasure it.

Wonderful pictures. What a great job. I would like to know about how many hours and dollars you have in it?

Ignoring the purchase price, I have about $13,500k into it. I recently put all my receipts and purchases into a spreadsheet, so I have an itemized list of everything that went into it. Hours? I didn't keep track. There were so many hours of research trying to figure out things, and then the hours on my back working in the belly pan, and hours wrapping my fingers after cuts from sharp aluminum, and hours at the masseuse trying to get rid of locked up muscles, and hours watching weather forecasts... I would say maybe 1,000 hours? I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I did extra things like spray paint the axles since I don't trust powdercoating, and painting all the bolts after they were on, just because it was so hard to get the old rusted ones off, and adding steel in spots underneath and in hidden areas that I thought were weak. But if I think of whole days, 1,000 is within reason. I'm not counting my wife's time in the upholstery and curtains, but I think she probably had 100-200.

Awesome! Love your commitment to restoring it back to original as much as possible. Your completion (if they ever are really complete) is an inspiration to all of the rest of us that are in the middle of a total restoration.

resto
I think you did a spectacular job on your trailer. A lot of us appreciate the original look and how hard it is to accomplish. I may have something you would like for this.. an original fire extinguisher.. cam out of a late 60's.. just a thought. looks great Richard.
