Unhappy Window Seal

I'm trying to replace the window seals on my 71 Int. Lots of fun!! Would be alot easier to remove the windows first. Looks like they hinge like the access doors at the top, but the stay bars that hold up the windows don't look removable. Supposed to last forever!. Any suggestions?

Remove the lift arms. They come come off. Raise the window "high." The two "J" shaped hinges will separate. Place the window on a carpet or blanket. Remove the old gasket. Burnish the sash with a wire wheel in an electric drill. Place the "Super weatherstrip" adhesive on the sash AND on the back of the gasket.

When dry to the touch, place the gasket in position, with the seam at the bottom. DO NOT stretch the gasket. Use plenty of adhesive. Reinstall the window, reinstall the lift arms, close the window, and latch it. After a couple of hours, open the window and flood the gasket with silicone spray. Leave the window open for an hour or so. Close the window.

After a few days, open the window and wipe the excess silicone spray off.

CAUTION. The gasket flares must go outward, the proper adhesive must be used, and be very careful when you engage the hinges, especially on the large windows.
We have those materials on sale on our web site, inlandrv.com Andy

Andy,
I see on your website you recommend the newer D type seal. Any particular reason? Thanks

Time changes many things, including technology.

The "D" gasket does a far superior job of sealing windows and doors, than the original double flared gasket.

The double flares, in time, had a tendancy to stay flat.

Since the "D" gasket is hollow, it pops back out everytime you open the windows or doors.

Notice the date of the original post I made, some 7 1/2 years ago.

An other question for Andy. The gaskets on my 64 Safari the side windows are all made of open cell foam. It looks like original material. However things do change. What would you recommend I use to replace that thin foam gasket.

Open foam gaskets are like a sponge.

They leak.

Airstream never installed open foam gaskets on windows.

Your windows originally had a thin hollow gray bulb type gasket, which flattened and stayed that way in short order.

You can correct the leakage, by installing the "D" gasket per instructions provided.

It's easy to do, and is the best answer to date.

Looks can be deceiving. Old does not make original. I will order some "D" gasket material for all 5 windows and extra for the door within the door gasket. Thanks Andy.

Thanks Andy. I noticed it was a long time ago, but figured I'd ask on an old thread since I don't want anyone to get excited and tell me to use the search function! lol

Vista window question:
We have a '70 Overlander. We think our vista window (port side) is leaking. We can see some of the gasket is no longer around the rim of the window, as if it has shrunk.
Suggestions on how to reseal this window? What is the 'normal' process?

Clean the glass, gasket and the edge of the vista view window frame, very well.

Then apply a bead of Vulkem or Sikoflex sealer, so that it completely covers the gasket and just touches the glass and metal frame.

That will take care of that gasket and leak issue, for a long, long time.

How about the trim for the Vista window? It has a half-inch gap in the bottom, and even with that gap where the trim should meet, it still sits off of the frame. Is this something we should replace, just glue in place and ignore where it should touch at the bottom, or search for a replacement piece of trim?
(we have the image attached to our gallery, it's the next one in line after the image we linked to above)

You can cut off the displaced gasket, or you can inject some sealer into the metal frame, and then push the gasket back in place. Then follow up with a bead of sealer, to completely cover the gasket.

Not really.

Parbond is more cosmetic and Vulkem and Sikoflex is more structural, if you wish.

What does the silicone spray do?
Are you referring to silicone lubricant spray?
When does the butyl tape go in during the installation?
What size D-seal would you recommend for a 65 overlander?

I bought a small amount of the original Hehr gasket (and glazing bead) and will use it on one window but would prefer to use the D-seal on the remaining windows since it seals better.

Thanks for your help and expertise!

Thanks for your help!
