Someone tried to break in/Lock busted!

Hi, we have a 1974 Airstream. We keep it up north for hunting. We just found out that someone tried breaking into it, and has busted the lock. The key hole is broken, where a chunk of metal is missing, and when you do put the key, it just spins and spins. Along with that, the outside handle is useless. We had to climb in through a window & open it from the inside. Right now, if we lock the door, there's no way to get in... unless we use the window again. Anyone have any ideas???

It sounds like so much damage has been done that you have no choice but to replace the entire door lock. Inland RV and Out of Doors Mart sell them. They are not cheap, but if the lock casing is damaged then new parts won`t help you.

Sorry to hear about the damage. I know Inland RV sells that door lock, you have the same setup as my '72. I believe the lock costs around $400-500.

You have a KT lock.

The complete replacement is very expensive, as it is only available from Airstream or an Airstream dealer.

Or, you can upgrade to a different lock kit, at about 1/3 the cost.

Fix it

I would take the lock out of the door and examine it for damage. Chances are it can be repaired. If it is the same lock I have on my '74 Argosy it is a very simple mechanism. In one of my previous posts there is an exploded view of the lock. A lot of the parts are available thru Out of doors Mart. Look for a thread titled. " '73 door handle when to crap" on 11/23/10
