Leaky Hot Water Heater, funky gas valve

Hi I have a '70 Caravanner, and I have recently been noticing wetness around the hot water heater compartment. It might be the water heater or it could be some residual water from a window leak (which should I wish for?). And my pilot light that I rigged from a 30 gallon home hot water heater is now, after a full season of cooperation, acting like a flame thrower. I am considering replacing the whole unit. Any thoughts on what's the best replacement or if there is an upgrade that I should consider doing once I'm in there taking it all apart?
Thanks,
Kelly

Hey Kelly,

Just my $0.02.

If the WH is original, old or of unknown age I'd replace it regardless of the leak source. Residential WH parts may work but they're probably not rated for RV service and could create a hazard.

Atwood and Suburban are two popular brands and they're not too expensive (depending on bell and whistles).

Check your PM's.

Regards,

Kevin

A good replacement is made by Atwood.

Your lucky you didn't have an explosion.

Natural gas components must not be used with LPG systems, EVER.

Can you post a pic of the outside of the trailer where the water heater is located?

Oh by the way. Love Santa Rosa. I was stationed at Bodega Bay while in the Coast Guard in the late 60's. Spent a lot of time in SR in my off hours.

Yeah, I love Santa Rosa too! Bodega must have been a nice post for you too.
I recently lost my camera, so I can't post a picture of the trailer right now. Thanks for all the help Andy and Kevin.
