Gas water heater suddenly stopped working

On a recent trip the gas water heater suddenly stopped. I checked fuse at panel and water heater and they were fine. I tried lighting it at the tank and it singed my eyebrows....oops. Has anyone had this happen? The electric continued to work. I don’t hear the pilot light on the gas clicking, not sure though if it ever did. This is on a 2018 international.

Check the thermal cutoff--a small electronic part in a clear plastic sleeve that's visible when you open the outside access door. If it looks singed, that's likely to be the problem.

Why would it be singed? An insect nest in the burner tube is the most likely cause. Clean out the tube, replace the thermal cutoff, and you should be good to go.

The other possible cause, as brick pointed out, is a failed control board. If the thermal cutout is intact, then you can replace that board. But don't waste your money on another Atwood board. Get a Dinosaur Electronics board. I've seen plenty of Atwood boards fail, but never a Dinosaur board.

So nothing looks singed, played around with it today and the gas water heater wants to start (tries two or three times, but no spark at all, smells like gas then the red comes on and stays on). We were camping for a week and it worked fine “last” night and then died.

Mine is a 2018 28 as well.

Is there a way to isolate and confirm it is the circuit board? If it was the circuit board why would the electric still work off of generator.

How is it trying to light if you have no spark at all?

Mine failed to light a year or two ago. I cleaned all the push on wire terminals and it hasn't given me trouble since.

I have a 2018 Flying Cloud 28'. Circuit board failed six months after delivery. Installed a Dinosaur board as dealer could not get me in soon enough. No further problems.

PS. OP gets extra credit for not calling it a "hot water heater".

There is a click “noise” but not typical to a normal pilot clicking to light. A normal pilot light goes click click click boom...

The Atwood boards are trash. Buy a Dinosaur Electronics UIB64 Ignition Board Available on Amazon for $122 and an additional 2 year extended warranty for $15.21 Total warranty period 5 years.

Water heater problems

I also have a 2018 International Signature. I am on my "fourth" electric board. Wish I would have went with the non-compliant Dinosaur board instead of the crappy chinese board they are putting in the units now. They had some significant problems with the boards in many of the 2018 airstreams and perhaps the 2019 as well. Still occasionally have a problem with the board; cold water gets hotter than hot water??? Going to Jackson Center the 18th to have many warranty problems fixedD!!!

Our 2019 FC had a similar issue, WH wouldn't work on either gas or electric when I got her out this Spring. Fuse on control board was blown, so I replaced that. It immediately blew again, so it was something more serious. Our AS warranty said appliances are covered by OEM, not them, so I called Dometic directly. They were very helpful and when I described the problem, they said, it was the control board. I offered to give them proof of purchase for the trailer and they even said, "that's OK, we trust you" and sent me a new control board the next day. 10 min install and it's worked fine all summer.

I thought about buying a spare to have onboard, until I saw the price. I'm going to have to look into Dinosaur Electronics.

There are more posts about problems with the Dometic igniter boards than one can count! I went through 3 before giving up and buying a Dinosaur board. It worked immediately upon installation - not a single problem since.
