Fresh water tank overflowing when city water connected

We parked our ‘18 Classic 33 in a campground and left it for a few days. City water was hooked up and turned on as was electricity. 2 days later, we got a call from the owner letting us know that water was “coming out of our trailer!”

We braced for the worst, but to our pleasant surprise, the trailer was completely dry inside. When I turned the water back on, water started running out of the fresh water tank filling inlet ventilation hole. When I turned the hose off, it stopped again.

Has anyone here had this situation? It appears that there must be a valve that is not working properly between the city water system and the fresh water tank. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, I have had the same problem. Disconnect the AS from all power and put the Battery switch to “store”.

The water check valve/ pump will reset itself while disconnected from all power.

Plug power back in and connect city water. Keep an eye on fresh water level. That should take care of the problem most of the time.

When connected to city water I do-not turn on the pump. I use one or the other but not both st the same time.

Great. I will try that. We won’t have our trailer again for about 3 weeks, but I will definitely try that and post
my results. I meant to add to the first post that the water pump was off when this happened. Thanks very much!

Never never leave your trailer alone with the city water connected.

When back at trailer, turn pump on and off a few times [city water off], and hopefully the pump's check valve will clear itself of grit.

Always use an inline water filter when filling the tank and when using city water. Always.

PS -- Have you read your owner's manual carefully? Chances are good that it covers some of this IMO.

This may not be complete and thorough advice IMO. See recent comment.

Also, the pump may need replacing IMO. TBD after steps just recommended to free up the grit, if possible.

I just had this happen on our 2017 Classic while on a trip. I ran on the pump/tank overnight and the next day everything worked fine. The grit in the check valve must have cleared out. I always use a water filter so I’m not sure the cause

I believe there have been reports of plastic shavings, from the manufacturing process, ending up in the water tank, due to lax worker habits about cleaning up properly. [IMO]

This is a great example of what a great site this is. I am not new to camping but I am always learning. Now that you point it out, it seems obvious to shut off the water supply to the trailer when not in use. Great advice from everyone - hopefully the simple steps mentioned will do the trick. I do always use an in-line water filter... Thanks everyone.

Just happened to me on my last trip.

Here is what I did:

Turned OFF the CITY water.

Used PUMP for the day

Turned ON the CITY water.

All was good.

I believe there was a debris in the tank that clogged the check valve in the pump.

What I plan on doing next is to add a secondary check valve from SHARKBITE between the fresh water tank and the pump. This should in theory prevent this from happening again.

You can add another / better check valve in the line on the feed line from the tank to the pump.

Change pump inlet filters regularly and always use a filter the when filling the water tank and when hooked to city water. No water problems for 15 seasons.
