Carefree awning ? on '63 Flying Cloud

How far should the awning pull away from the pinch-welt on the trailer? I am replacing the fabric on my old Carefree Awning that came with my trailer and there was only 4' of material left. I'd guess approx. 8' or so, but is there a standard number of feet a Carefree Awning should extend? THe spring drum is approx. 3" in diameter. and the width of the awning is 11' 8". Thanks. Andy, try calling Carefree directly by phone. I bought my replacement material from Carefree through my local RV store, but they helped me make sure that the replacement material along with the holding spline were correct.
