Help!!! finding spring for drum brakes

Please help,

I need to find this spring or a hardware kit for my old drums on a 1966 Globetrotter.
I have been to 6 different auto parts stores and brake places and no one can find a match.
Does any one know what hardware kit would work on my original back plates.

Try Inland RV in California or OutDoors Mart I think it is. There is a possiblity that the parts are obsolete. I know my 77 had old style magnuts and I did not take the chance on finding parts . The axles were shot anyway so I just got all new.EVERYTHING. You may just get away with changing the backing plates and getting all new brakes.

It's been a very long time, but. Doubtfull you'll find one in a modern parts store. Most cars drum brakes had one end much longer than the other on the lower return spring after auto adjusters came out. Heavy duty 3/4 ton trucks up to 1 1/2 ton often had springs with equil length, at least into the '80s. You may want to check a light truck shop and look for the oldist guy there. In a pinch you can buy 2 of the modern ones and clip the long end off one to make a hook and eye extention for the other. I've also seen 8 penny nails bent and used to extend!

Hi there, Go get yourself two new backing plate assemblies. You get new magnets, new brakes and new hardware all in one shot. Don't forget to take the old one with you when you go get the new ones. It helps a great deal for them to see exactly what you have. Try an RV shop or comercial trailer shop. Forget about going to an auto parts store. They won't have what you need.

Bruce, go to a place that works on brakes....they should have springs from old brake sets laying all over every where. Bill

In a perfect world you would replace the entire backing plate as a fully loaded assembly.

Given that go to a trailer store, like this one.

That appears to be a light spring that pushes pushes the magnet against the plate in the drum.
If you have not found an answer by Sunday PM me and i may be able to come up with a couple used ones. Won't be home to look until Sunday.

You need to ask for a "brake adjuster kit".

That kit includes the adjuster and spring.

But, they break because of being over heated way to many times. Normally, all of them are replaced.

You will be money ahead, and leave headaches behind, if you replace the complete backing plates, that have the oval magnets, either in the standard types or the new "self adjusting" types brakes, as some of the other parts are no longer available.

That very spring stranded our 66 overlander when it broke and dropped the adjuster and it jammed up the wheel. I was trading the trailer so didn't want to invest a lot on upgrades. I was able to find new adjusters, and all new springs at a local RV place that had been around awhile. You're looking for the adjuster spring and I was unsuccessful finding one at other places like online trailer supplies or local shops until the RV place because that old style is not made anymore. If you got an old shop check with them, but if they have them I'd replace all the springs, if one is failing the rest are likely not far behind.

Might check the condition of your axle anyway, if it needs replacing then you'd end up with new backing plates and brakes anyway.

If you decide to go with new backing plates, shoes, adjusters and oval magnets, then order the complete assembly on-line. I just had all 4 wheels renewed with new backing plates and the works at a local brake place and ......it was expensive!! Charge me $97.00 each for the assemblies, with labor and tax it was $617.00!!

I just replaced the backing plates on a 1970 Nomad with Dexter 4-lug, 10 x 2 1/4 nev-r adjust brakes. They cost me $84+shipping. The hardest part was finding new 7/16 x 20 nuts.
