Dumb Newbie Mistake #1
I moved my 68 GT (just bought one month ago) to my driveway so I could work on it for a few days. When I disconnected the hitch I forgot to undo the cable for the safety brake. Im not sure of the correct method of repair. Anyone care to enlighten me? If I cant get the parts to repair will I be able to move it or is it stuck here until I repair it. ThankYou.

Plug the pin back in . . . fast . . . if you have a battery . . . or are connected to shore power with the inverter on line. When the pin goes in, it opens the circuit.

With the pin out for a long time time, your battery should be dead and you may have damaged you brake magnets. If you are very lucky your break away switch is not working and nothing is harmed. New switches are not very expensive.

With NO POWER going to the brakes,(No Battery, no Shore power, not hooked to the tow vehicle) you should be able to move the unit. That is if your going a short distance on a flat surface. If your on a steep grade you would not want to move it without brake.

Break Away Switch
Fortunately, I connected to shore power right away so draining the battery isn't a problem. If I purchase a new break away switch is there anything I need to know about the install?

I'd try again to insert the pin. Never seen one that the pin would not go back into, albeit with some force necessary .... it's got some built-in friction and detents to keep it from falling out accidentally.
But with power to the 12volt system, either from battery or shore power, seems likely to me that your brake magnets will have been fried by now. They're designed for intermittent use, and you may have had them engaged since the time your pin came out ... Please have them carefully checked out by a pro.

I think your missing the part about burning up the brake mags. If not done so already these will be toast. You can order a new brakeaway switch from any of the vendors on the forums. If it were me I would cut the wire that leads to the switch one at a time so that you are sure that the brakes are off. Then you can cap the wires with wire nuts. When you recieve your new switch you will be able to solder the new one on.
Chris
BTW the old pins are a pain to put back in. on mine i feel like I am going to brake it.

On my old switch, the pin was dry. I just applied some white grease and it slides right back in. It takes quite a pull to remove and an equal push to get it back in.
#2 for cutting the wires if all else fails.

Breakaway switches typically connect via 2 wires. Replacing one is fairly easy. Just remove the exisiting switch and wire the new one in it's place. Check the installation notes but usually the 2 wires are interchangeable.
Checking your brake magnet performance is important and as others have stated should be performed before heading out on your next trip. If replacement is required the task is fairly straight forward once the brake drums are removed.
Best of luck,
Kevin
