Argosy tire dilemma

Hi all, yet another tire question, just purchased this diamond in rough, barn find (without the barn, & complete with mice droppings ) anyways, I didn't tow away as the tires are 10yrs old and shot. The trailer has 15" wheels and a tiny space between wheel & frame. I'm curious what was the original wheel/tire size and what's the max preferred size? I need to purchase 4 new tires & wheels asap before I tow away. any advice MUCH appreciated!!

I have a 24 footer that I put 215 75 15s on. I had to then but 1/2 inch spacers so they wouldn’t rub in the interior wheel well. Once I replaced the axles I no longer needed the spacers

Standard AS size..

The argosy will take the normal AS tire size... 225/75/15's in ST rating. (I won't get into the whole 16" LT size argument.. you can search online here for that option).

Rims are pretty standard 15x6" size, the bolt circle is 6 (lugs) x5.5

Here's a good thread about tires / rimshttp://www.airforums.com/forums/f305/tire-wheel-sizes-54436.html

Congrats! That'll be a fun trailer!

this tire says 7.00 15 , so 7" width? as opposed to what would have been 6" on original ? I don't like the wheels, so want to replace tires & wheels at same time and go with what would have been original size. thanks

That probably is the original size. Its the size I run on my 72 Sovereign. (I run Yokohama LT tires)

That is a bias ply tire as opposed to a radial. It is the original size and they are still made, but are seldom used. What don't you like about the wheel? If by "wheel" you mean rim they will take multiple sizes including radial tires.

The rim or wheel on his ride is not stock. (or original) It appears to be a painted black wagon wheel type. I wouldn't want it either.

If you are looking for a stock stamped wheel, just make sure you get one rated for the load. Many passenger car rims do not have that weight rating. I believe the RV weight rating you seek is 2600 #s.

Nick

Glad to hear that you snagged that Argosy.

My 66 Tradewind came with the same tires 7:00 x 15. I just installed Goodyear Endurance ST225/R15.

I also recommend the RY215. Very high quality. See Tire Rack for 7R-15 sizing. I had Discount Tire order them from TR for me.

Centramatic Balancers after the use of a Hunter GSP-9700 spin balancer. New lug nuts. Dedicated Torque wrench. And quality tire pressure gauge.

It's not going to get used a huge amount, so will prob just go with ST tires for now.
I got super lucky with the trailer, seller said he had a ton of calls, I just happened to be first Needs a mega clean up though

Very small gap between tire and trailer body. Doesn't seem right ?

Just to end this thread here are a few pics. The old 225's had rubbed against the frame.

The axles are shot and “bottomed out”. (I.e. the suspension is bottomed out)

Since the rim are not stock tires may be as well.

Dialing back to a smaller tire one needs to know what you need.

As a side note this is what the RV manufacturers deal with. How much interior space can I save with the minimum sized tire/wheel combo. Best place to start is weigh the thing! Then add weight for anything NOT in the trailer now. Like .....
Camping gear
Full water tank
Full waste tanks
Gear
Full propane tanks
Anything extra you might carry like
Gear

Then take that number and multiply by 110%. That is your the max load. Find tires that are rated in total for that number or maybe another 110% depending on tire. (P, LT or ST designed tires)

Going to a larger diameter rim (16") may make the fit inside the wheel tubs a little tighter fit.
