Alternative to GYM 225/75R15

Just replaced the GYM 225/75R15 tires on our 2015 Bunk with Nokian Rotiiva AT All Season LT235/75R15 116/113 S (up to 112 mph, max load 2760 lb) and could not be happier.

https://www.nokiantires.com/all-seas...an-rotiiva-at/

Purchased from Discount Tires for $719.92, steel valve stems, mounted and balanced minus $100 rebate so actually $619.92. Should get $200 for the GYMs so grand total $419.92.

One of the cheap plastic lug nut caps split off so I put new Gorilla solid chrome splined lug nut kit on for $45.00.

Got a couple of weeks to go before we get back on the road.

Looks like a great choice. I am glad to see there is a 15" tire with that much load capacity available.

Just so we're clear: This tire enjoys the same load capacity rating at the Michelin Defender LTX M/S 235/75R15/XL 109T. Here's a URL that should work: http://cdn.acceleration.michelinman....tail-sku-table

Not passing judgement or anything, just making sure we don't get confused.

Glad you like it so far, hope the tire works out great for you!

Michelins have a 109 load index which is 2271 and being P rated needs reduced according. The tires mentioned above are an Lt rated tire with an 116 load range. Theres big difference between then and the Michelins.

I used to run Nokians on my Touareg and they were a good tire on and off road. They were a softer compound so wore a little faster but that shouldn't be an issue. Keep us posted on how they do.

Good move for your neck of the woods IMO, as I have read great things about the Nokian line on other forums, especially about the softer rubber compound "gripping" the pavement better when needed. We may consider a set of Nokian pure snow tires for our van tow vehicle if winter conditions warrant.

The worst blizzard I ever drove through, with chains on an older van, was coming into Flagstaff from the east, a long time ago. A gruesome trip. We finally found a motel and slept for a day while the storm passed. They had to close down the Interstate.

The new Nokian tires will be a good investment for your travels over the winter, as you noted in the other thread, offering good braking and control on curves, especially downhill curves with camber to be dealt with IMO.

Happy Trails, and thanks for starting this thread and the excellent photos! We look forward to further reports down the road.

Peter

Thoughts?

Typically Discount Tire locations will not mount non ST tires on a trailer according to other member's experiences. Looks like your DT location was more enlightened. Looks like a good choice and more than competitive with Michelin. Thanks for sharing.

My local discount tire store in Colorado mounted my Michelin LTX tires without question. Must be up to the particular franchise/store to make the call....

...as did the Salt Lake City location when I picked up our new (to us) Airstream and wanted great tires for the 2,500 mile trip home. They knew to properly derate them before agreeing they are adequate for the load (they told me they wouldn't have installed them if they were not).

WOW!!!
You get a higher load rating without having to upgrade to a larger rim. Count me in.

Thanks for posting this.

B.T.W Where are they manufactured?

Via the link in Post #1, Helsinki Finland is the HQ, and the press page says they are opening a new distribution facility in Canada.

.
Company info says they’re made for northern climates... I wonder how they’ll wear and perform in southern climates in the summer...?

I like that they appear to be competitive with Michelins but cheaper (with a 34’, 6 tires + spare opens ones eyes a little wider at checkout time...).

Open eyes are not the issue. The wide open wallet is the real problem. 😀
