Dual A/C

We bought our 2018 FC 25 "off the lot" equipped with dual A/C; our one hesitation was that we thought the extra cost of the second unit was wasted of $$ on a trailer that size. BTW, we live in the Sacramento area; i.e. hot summers!! The first time we were prepping the trailer for a trip we thanked the lucky stars that we "accidentally" ended up with the dual system. We try not to travel to hot places. but if just for prepping for a hot season trip and keeping the inside comfortable and the fridge cold, it's worth its weight in gold and we'd never buy another w/o it!

When you have 2 units are both units the same Btu.i have 30’ bed room maybe 8’ x 8’ and definitely need more capacity it would also be a backup if one quits.

It's your choice. Both units could be 15K (instead of both 13.5K or one of each) so long as you buy an efficient unit. For example, I recently replaced a 6 yr. old singe 13.5K in my class b with a new 15K. The new model is more efficient and uses .5 to 1A less the the older smaller unit.

No, not the same when ordered on a new unit. One is 15k and one is 13.5k.

Edit: Upon second look I see you have a 1994 Excella. If the electrical can handle it you could probably choose which size you want to add. I imagine if yours came with one then your Excella isn't wired for a second one. Could get expensive.

I have a 69 Ambassador, currently gutted. Has anyone ever added one on a vintage. Ive considered it, but where? Original is about dead center, and rear vent is almost at endcap. Seems like I’d have to relocate both?

I have 30 amp power. 2 units would require 50 amp 220 which would require a 4 conductor #8
Has anyone fished a cable from lower storage compart to uper storage where breaker panel is located? Or located panel to other location cable?

I had a second unit added to mine and they just added a second outside 30 amp service that feeds only the new unit. I put in a switch that allows me to use either unit off of one cord. If I want both units, I use two cords.

You only need 2 units above 90 degrees, so most of the time I only deal with one 30 amp cord. They are much nicer to work with than the 50 amp cords. Also, my 30 amp "generator" plug in the front of the camper still works as designed.

It cost less than half of what the factory charges for the upgrade.

Thumbs up Great idea

I like that idea.
I already carry a 30 amp 25’ extension cable that i could use to plug in with.
Do you have a 2nd breaker box mounted?

Yes, I did get one new 30 amp breaker on the new incoming line. In my 27FB Classic, the switch and the new breaker ended up in the little cabinet under the refrigerator.

I am not sure your extension cord will work with the twist lock on the side of the trailer.

We are in south west Florida this month and the last week has been in 90 with high humidity. I have lined all windows and sky lights with the silver insulation and one AC is not working. Today I closed both doors going into bedroom and that helped but bedroom was very warm. But best i can tell 1 unit will no work in this heat and humidity.

Did you get that done at an airstream dealer? And if you don’t mind me asking, what did it cost? I have a 28FC with one AC and was thinking of adding another unit.

I am going to semi-settle/snowbird in the deep south and know my single 13.5 K unit will sometimes be inadequate for the 25 FB. I am replacing the 13.5 K with a 15 K. If I need more capacity, I will go the super cheap route, adding a small window unit or roll around unit in the bedroom, vented out the front window. I can power it with an extension cord to the 20 amp outlet on the post... and pull it and store it when I travel to temperate areas.

Another advantage of 2 units: When 2 units aren’t needed if you are sitting in the “lounge” area you can turn the one in the bedroom on and there isn’t as much noise. Then when you go to bed you can turn the other unit on in the lounge area and the one above the bed off. Quieter to sleep, but still stays cool. Also I am in WI so it’s nice to have the heat pump set up that way too.

Get 2. You will never regret it.

Camper Clinic in Buda Tx between San Antonio and Austin. It was $3,600.

Both were equipped with a single 15,000 btu air conditioner.

We do take certain precautions in hot weather camping. We keep the bedroom and large streetside windows covered with the silver window insulation. We also cover the skylight with insulation during the summer.

I am not trying to talk anyone out of adding a second air conditioning unit in their Airstream. I am simply stating what has worked for us in the long haul.

Who would have thought that 1 ac would ever be enough on a 34'!!'

That will work. We generally camp where we don’t need AC, but when it is needed I take the small efficient light weight unit out of the closet and install it in the window. You may not even need the main AC unit at night- nice quiet sleep.

I am also renovating a 34’. I hate the loud AC. I plan on installing a 12k mini split heat pump. If more capacity is needed I will install a 5k window unit in the bedroom.
