If Russia invades Ukraine, fuel costs may skyrocket. OPEC and Russia has caused prices to go up as they supply a large part of the crude oil to the world.

Perfect timing for gas prices to peak. We leave for Key West next week.
It’s only 1,500 miles.

Wait a minute,, I just did a quick estimate. That’s $1,000 for gas. Maybe we should fly, and stay in a condo..

Ours has been steadily rising last 2 months....$3.63 diesel yesterday at HEB. here in Georgetown TX. We are "planning" a 3 week trip in March to Borrego Springs to meet up with some AS friends for a week, then on to San Diego, back thru AZ, and home. At these prices, $100+ per fill up is not getting us excited for this trip!

I filled up my truck in Denver yesterday at $3.99 per gallon. This was for regular 85 octane gasoline.

$3.81 in the Philadelphia, PA suburbs for regular. Diesel around $4.10. Costco always 10-20 cents cheaper a gallon

I remember a time (just over 1.5 years ago) when $80 could fill up my tank. Now most pumps cut off at $100 and it doesn’t even fill the tank [emoji22]

I can honestly say that in many cases the price of gas will affect my distance use of the Airstream. It's awfully easy to trade the price of gasoline towing, with a cheap airfare from Southwest Airlines and a decent Airbnb rental to sunny Florida. The only thing I have found is that rental cars are out of site, but in my case my son with his connections in the car rental industry has gotten me reasonable car rentals. Right now the Airstream might be relegated to trips on the weekends within a 200 mile or less range.

3.499 for reg. here in Wisconsin. Diesel is about 20 to 25 cents per gallon higher. Some places lower and some higher. And going up. We are going to make a trip to Dakotas in July. My guess gas will be $4 by summer here (higher if this Ukraine Russia thing blows). It is going to cost at least $480 in gas just for a 1200 mile round trip. With the camper it is a 2 day trip one way. With a car it is a one day trip one way. That’s 2 less days on the road. My van gets 30 mpg. I could save $320 in gas and $200 in campground fees. Not have to drive the camper. And stay three nights in a motel. Plus it is an easier drive. Makes me ponder. I like sleeping in my own bed..etc. But there does come a point….

I’m not sure how you guys on the road will do this. Will have to limit road time? Shorter trips?

This car gets close to 30mpg. My 2012 Ram 2500HD Cummins gets barely 11 mpg towing. The projects out close to $853.00 per thousand miles when planning for a road trip. The drive to our summer mountain Airstream RV park is 130 miles one way for a projected fuel cost of $110.89 at this price.

With the distances in the US to get most anywhere, when the fuel prices (gas and or diesel) cross the $6.00 per gallon threshold, I bet the Airstream trailer order backlog will turn into lots of cancellations.
I was thinking the same thing with regard to RV purchases. The pandemic is basically over. Inflation is firmly imbedded. And people are going to start pulling in the spending. Yet you would think people are flush with cash. I do real estate appraisals and I cannot fathom what people are paying for second homes. 100% higher than just 3 or 4 years ago for the same property in the area I work. This isn’t a “have to” purchase. And if they are using them for Arbnb’s the numbers simply do not work in most cases.

Bottom line: gas prices must affect RV travel and RV purchases? Or will it? Right now it’s hard to say.

Of course fuel prices affect travel. But eating and sleeping in your own bed has advantages, some which save money. CG’s rates have increased a lot, but so have motels and hotels. Restaurant prices have increased also and last year we thought $20 for breakfast for two was high, but now it is getting to $30 and more. Dinner out is much more.

The bright side to aging and not being able to travel gazillions of miles, we are saving on gas. As our metabolisms slow, we eat less, also saving money.

Alaska travelers or anyone who goes to Canada will suffer fuel price shock.

I’m unsure inflation is embedded yet. Time is needed to know. Poor infrastructure, Covid, employment disruptions, and talk of war all lead to increased prices and people blame leaders who aren’t responsible.

Once again, our Valentine’s Day meal will be take out cheese pizza from Sam’s. Since their cheese is so cheap, we have them remove half of it and use our own at home along with our own toppings. A large pizza—two days dinner—for $10. Less you think this was my idea, actually my wife came up with the idea. We often have gone out for dinner the day before or after Valentine’s Day to avoid crowds, but this is even better.

If Ukraine is invaded, more disruptions internationally and higher prices. Ukraine raises a lot of wheat, so expect wheat and bread prices to go up by summer or fall.

So if we’re talking about families with children that already have RV’s, I suspect they will take shorter trips closer to home. Seniors and those that have more discretionary $$ will suck it up and go, maybe for shorter time periods. State campgrounds will be booked, I’am seeing that in my state. RV production is going to be in excess of last years production and that was a record year. What makes it so difficult now is the pandemic and it’s fallout, we haven’t been in a place like this and I don’t think anyone can reliably predict the future.

North east Illinois about 3.55 a gallon for Regular. .40 a gallon more for mid grade and another .40 to .50 cents a gallon for premium. Diesel costs about the same as mid grade. Fortunatly I am close to the Wisconsin boarder. I go up there and save a good .40 cents a gallon. Feel sorry for anyone buying gas in Chicago. Add a good .60 to .70 cents a gallon to the prices I already quoted, downtown even more!
