Our most common comments are:

1. Wow I didn't know they made Airstreams with 3 axles.

2. I've always liked those "Silver Bullet" trailers.

Comments,, that is a new one?? thought it was old,,, wow,, is modern inside,,, perfect strangers coming to the door asking to look inside,, sometimes i give a tour,, sometimes not,, pricing of Airstreams always shocks them,,, guess they think 3,500 is all a trailer should cost, ,, remember i live in Montana,,, happy trails,, donna

Hi, two comments not mentioned at all or very often: "That trailer has been really well taken care of." Thinking it was antique, not knowing it was actually fairly new. And from one of my co-workers: "Bob bought one of those really expensive Airstream, Stainless Steel trailers."

My favorite comment was from last October. I was gassing up our '71 Buick convertible with '66 Tradewind in tow when a gentleman in his luxury car pulled up along side. He said,"Really Nice! What year is it?" Thinking what was the norm for us that he meant our big red convertible I answered, "It's a '71 Buick." "NO,NO!' he exclaimed, "The Airstream!"

What Fred said.....so long ago.

I get folks who slow down and do a drive by with their digital camera phones. Plenty of thumbs up.

I get way more attention from my logo....I always ask if they can do the Latin translation.

At night I hear cell phone conversations in the parking areas about the "government sticker."

Best yet was the wide eyed look this week in Little River, SC when a grounds crew at a golf course looked ready to bolt when I pulled up the driveway....must have thought it was the INS bus come to check visas.

Barry, shoot him a price based on you taking his check, and buying a new Classic, and new Suburban with it.

For some reason, I got more comments when we had our little Argosy, and Marie gets more comments now that we have the Overlander. Since ours isn't polished, and has a few beauty marks on it, it's obvious it's been around the block. Most comments are the "my (relative, friend, neighbor) had one of those." One was a rather snobby comment about it from a Marathon owner, "Why did you get that old trailer?" My rather snippy reply: "Because I couldn't find a 40 year old Marathon!"

Okay, it was hot, he was rude, and I was tired, but he got the idea. We exchanged tours, he thought ours was kind of simple, I thought his was ostentatious. I pointed out that when ours was built, it was the most advanced RV at the time, just as his currenly is. We both agreed that camping should be what you want it to be, and parted friends.

Last weekend we boondocked for 3 days at a boat race in NJ. We were the only Airstream nestled among a large group of campers, mostly composed of giant SOB motor homes. It was our first time at this event, any everyone was really nice (well, except for the jack@ss in the motor home next to us who never made eye contact, and nearly asphyxiated us with his generator). Over the weekend, we estimated about 45 people, from teenagers to retirees, asked us for the tour, and we had a great time showing them. Some of the comments were:
"Oh my God, I love it"
"I gotta git me one of these."
"Is it for sale?"
"They still make these?"
"Wow, I've never seen one of these up close!"
My favorite: "I think you should cut off the back part of this sucker and attach it a big hinge on the top, so you could haul a boat and stuff."

The usual.

I get the "oh I thought it was an Airstream, but now that I look at it I know it can't be". Poor little Argosy. Of course I tell them it IS an Airstream. Then they want to know if the "new" ones are painted now. Seems like a 78 Argosy is pretty hard to explain.

I used to tell people it was an Airstream model that was painted, that seems to satisfy them. It also happens to be the truth.
We get the "Aren't they heavy? They're made out of stainless steel, you know" comments as well, I have to explain it is aircraft grade sheet aluminum...

When we had somenew tires put on our 1975 Argosy we overheard one of the guys putting the tires on say, What is it?? The other guy replied some kind of Time Capsule. WOW

When we stop we often have people who want to take a peek inside. They often ask when they stopped building them. I tell them at 5PM, but they will be starting up around 8AM tomorrow

.

What I enjoy the most is when a couple come in to take a look and they start telling thier spouse about the Airstream they had growing up and all the great places they traveled to and the great times they had. Many of these folks will be Airstream owners in the future.

Some stand in speechless awe. Some silently don sunglasses. Some merely bow down reverently. A few have run back and set fire to their SOB's. A few have also asked to be taken back. One asked how many slices at a time and where I got the bread.

Our 1989 squarestream always gets comments.
Is airstream making a new model.
I have had people follow me to gas stations to look,including an owner of a Airstream dealership.He had never seen one other than photos.
But the most comman is from other Airstream owners when thay come inside is OH how nice,so roomy.I love it.

The comment that I received from a campground attendant on my return trip from last year's Internationall Rally in Salem, OR was one that I am sure others must, at times, think:

"Why would anyone paint an Airstream??"

In visiting with him, I learned that he had never heard of the Argosy and had just assumed that it was an Airstream model name. He was rather shocked when I filled him in with a short history of the Argosy line.

Another comment that I received a few years ago from a bystander at fuel stop when I was towing my Overlander home from a visit at Ace Fogdall RV in Cedar Falls, Iowa with my '75 Eldorado:

"Those Airstreams sure must be heavy if a Cadillac with a 500 cubic inch V8 has difficulty pulling one, but I don't understand why your car's front wheels were spinning??"

My response was that the Cadillac had plenty of power and was happy towing the 6,000 pound Overlander -- it just didn't like the fresh, loose gravel on the rain-slick road compounded by the steep grade of the Interstate off-ramp.

The real problem was a Spring shower compounding the lack of traction provided by a newly oil and chipped suface on the road with a steep approach ramp with a Stop sign. The Eldorado's front drive had difficulty getting enough traction on the loose gravel to launch the nearly 11,000 pound combined weight of the combination -- I have since modified the adjustment of the weight distribution bars to solve this particular problem, but at the time was still working to get just the right adjustment for a front wheel drive tow vehicle.

A few of the comments I've had,"I know what that is","who bought out Airstream when they started making them like that,Fleetwood?" And of course every one wants to buy/trade stuff for it

.One guy has a standing offer "when ever I get around to selling it" The same guy has tried trading me a Harley for it

Our very first weekend out last weekend we encountered the following:

"Is that yours, or are you borrowing it from your parents?"

One guy to another, with three kids in tow, "That Airstream is way too expensive." To which I replied, "Not as expensive as kids would be, and a lot less maintenance."

From a girl riding a horse, to whom we said, "That's a beautiful horse." And she said, "Yeah, but I'd rather have an Airstream."
