David Suzuki 'Nature of Things'

Tomorrow night (Thurs Feb 16, 2012), on "The Nature of Things," David Suzuki and his daughter will be traveling across Canada with an Airstream. Check out the link for "trailer" (pun intended).

From the link:
"In a new installment of Suzuki Diaries, David and his daughter, Sarika, set out to discover whether some of Canada’s biggest cities are ready for the challenges of the future.

Like eco-nomads, father and daughter embark on a cross-country journey of exploration, housed within a compact, “off-the-grid” Airstream trailer. It’s a small space with little room for excess or waste, making it a perfect metaphor for an efficient way of living."

I'll have to tune in. Does it air on any American networks for our friends to the South?

Odd. I saw a trailer for it this morning on CBC, and they showed what looked like the back of a relatively new AS. In the opening shot on the link you posted, they show what look like to me, a '60s smaller model.

I wonder which it is?

On the site it says:
Available Around the World

Over the years, episodes from the series has been broadcast in more than 80 countries. It has won hundreds of awards, including six Gemini Awards as the country’s Best Documentary Series, and has garnered an International Emmy nomination in both the Best Documentary and Non-Fiction categories.

Maybe it will air on the same day in the States, or maybe it will come out later. I'm not sure if it can be viewed it online. Looks pretty interesting.

Hi Aage,
Yes, the photo at beginning has a vintage model and double-bike, but if you play the trailer, it shows a newer model (maybe a 19 or 23 footer). We'll have to watch and see . . . can't wait!

Lisa, thanks for posting that. Combines two of our favorite things - Airstreams, and Canadian cities (my DW lived in Montreal for a while, and we took a liking to Halifax when we visited.) Hope we can figure out a way to see it here in the States...

Most of it was done with a 2009 19 Airstream. However just for fun David & Sharifa had a ride on our tandem bike towing a 61 Pacer. We'll have to see how it all turns out.

DVR...set.

Being a border town, with the Great White North just 1/2 mi West of us, the "Nature of Things" has been a regular for quite awhile.

I was going to post Lisa and Paul's link to this episode, but they beat me to it! If you don't have access to the T.V. episode, you might be able to download a podcast from the www.cbc.ca website.

Don't ask me how, I'm a "technosaur"...

Wow!……very enlightening program, just shows to go 'ya how much can be done when good people apply themselves.

I smiled a little right at the beginning when David's daughter proclaimed…"gee we're almost out of water" BTDT

I don't know if it's the nature of documentary making but that one hour show could have been extended to five or six hours, and maybe spread over a few weeks; I think there was the potential for much, much more from that. Anyhoo, it was nice to see Can-Am's Jetta and Bambi being hauled around on TV.

I can't recall if it was a still on the website or an early part of the programme but they did have the trailer unhitched in Detroit. Briefly!

We were thinking the same thing. Each city visited might have made a full episode.

I strongly suspect that there isn't enough to say of a concrete nature about positive developments that have been done that could support many more episodes.

Either that or they are among Canada's best-kept secrets.

If someone had asked me what projects I could point to that showed positive steps towards energy conservation, the only thing that is top of mind to me is the single wind generator installed down by Exhibition Park in Toronto.

I read somewhere that Suzuki's national image is one of a person continually saying that it's too late to do anything, we are doomed etc, and this show was part of a remedial position he is taking against that.

Hence, showing him as a father, and one that cares about what has been done.

I wondered where his wife is in all this. She could could have waved goodbye from their home, no? The only mention of his family that I have ever heard from him is to do with his daughter.

His wife is too busy running their foundation. I think that she prefers to sty out of the spotlight.

It's obvious she is doing a great job at that.
