I will be happy to share info and answer these questions as we tear into it, thanks!

Here's the Mobile Industrial tag. So... 36 feet is the length?

The serial number 36-M1-S113 on the Mobile Industrial tag decodes as follows:
  • 36 = 36'
  • M1 (should be MI) = Mobile Industrial
  • S = Santa Fe Springs Plant
  • 113 = the 13th 36' built (they started at 101)
Being the 13th built, means this one was built in 1961, though they built 36 footers in 1962 and 1963 as well as is documented on page 8 of the serial number decoder I posted a link to in post #17 of this thread. The "8 61" at the bottom of the tag indicates this trailer was built in August 1961.

This may the dumbest question of the day, but I feel this project needs its own thread to document what we learn... where best to post it?

Here's some pictures of a rare 40' model that was built for flatcar use by a railroad.

Unfortunately, they keep listing that trailer as a 1962, but I believe all the 40-Airstreams were built in 1960, as in 1961 they began making all the long railroad trailers as Mobile Industrial trailers with a different appearance.

Hi Ridinghood,
"111-2557" is not the serial number assigned by Airstream, though "0861" indicates that August 1961 is the production month and year. "111-2557" is some sort of California Department of Housing assigned number. Check page 8 of this file to see what the real Airstream assigned serial number should be:

Hi Bee and Josh,
Your 1960 35' Airstream looks very similar (but not exact) this this 1958 35' prototype that Airstream built and tested for Southern Pacific Railroad. These large 1960 Airstreams were also sold to Western Pacific Railroad.

Serial number 35S-1005 was the 3rd 1960 35-footer built by Airstream (first in 1960 was 35-S1003), and the 5th overall as 35-1001 and 35-1002 were prototypes built in 1958. The 35' in the photo I am attaching below is unlabeled, but is presumably either 35-1001 or 35-1002.
