Wow, verry efficient. But totally understandable why you won't make it to the mini-rally. But don't worry, it won't be the last. Maybe once you get settled in you can organize the next one on your side of the mountains?

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

X, I agree with Stef. Amazingly efficient! I want to know how you have things set up for the cats. My cat isn't doing too well with her new owners and I'm tempted to try to bring her along....but as she is an ex-feral cat and totally freaked out about change, I'm not sure life on the road would suit her. Ugh! I'm never getting another pet....

At any rate, it's too bad you can't make it to the coast this time. I'd like to see your menagerie (sp?).

Hi All,

We made it all the way to Boise tonight! (where's allyvs when you need her? LOL! Hi Ally!). Driving this morning up through Price, Utah was a bit unsettling. Saw a jack-knifed semi-trailer and lots of snow... But we made it through it fine - slowly. Two years ago we were towing our vintage A/S and broke a side window on the same stretch of road. We are not very fond of that drive...

This is a move to Bend and not just a short-term visit. Of course, we have to like it but we intend to "base-camp" from there and explore the beautiful NW regardless.

Hope to see and meet you all real soon.

X

For those that are interested, here's a pic of our backend setup I took for you this afternoon outside of SLC. Please forgive the "Rube Golberg" appearance. It really does work great. BTW, we do let the cats out too for time to stretch. Iggy's on top watching my wife tending the kitties.

The other pic is of the snow we found this morning...

Great news on your move to Oregon and the Northwest!! You'll enjoy the high desert (similar to Sante Fe). It's also great to see posts with AS's on the move in the Western United States.....esp CCD's. Your pet arrangement is well organized, and much better than putting kittys in the AS. Sounds like you've been doing a kinda "non-stop" route to Bend, OR! Are your knuckles white yet (from driving thru snow)???? Doesn't allow much time for sight seeing. That will come later! What route are you taking from Boise to Bend......Hwy 20 thru Burns, or 26 thru John Day?? We took Hwy 20 from Ontario, OR off I-80 thru Burns to Bend. Nice drive....mostly high desert. If weather forecast is dry, it's pretty safe......just kinda bumpy with expansion joints in the road. Have a safe remainder of your trip and keep us posted on this momentous move!

Hey Jim, et al,

Let's just say that yesterday took lots of concentration. There weren't many other TT's on the road for good reason.

I was looking at the map last night, Jim, and was wondering about Hwy 20. It's 20 miles farther to take Hwy 26 thru John Day, in my estimation. You think it worth the extra since we've seen so much high desert in our lives already? We would like to take the most beautiful route into Bend, if you catch my drift.

Thanks for the help. We're off in a couple of hours.

X,
Hwy 20 I remember had these "expansion joints" that rocked the AS & TV for quite a distance east of Burns for not so comfortable drive. The drive is scenic around Juntura thru the canyons. Hwy 26 is more scenic thru forested high desert, and you'll be passing thru some scenic areas from Unity to John Day. 26 is a lot longer trip, and I think is higher in elevation, so greater chance of hitting snow. Personally, I'd choose Hwy 20. We ran into snow when camped at BLM CG at Chickahominy Reservoir 3 wks ago.....was a complete surprise and some white knuckle driving.

Snow?

Ok, I could look at my map more closely, but is there any kind of snow between I5 and the coast (coming down south from Portland)? I really didn't even think that we'd hit any. Am I wrong? I haven't bought chains for the Dodge yet.... actually, I haven't bought any chains for our Seattle snow, it disappears so fast.

Not yet 3Ms. Snow west of the Cascades in Oregon is usually only somewhat common in Jan/Feb. Even then it normally doesnt stick long. The west part of the state hasnt been cold enough for snow yet.

I live just west of Portland.

We've been to the coast in winter, and as long as you take a major highway over the coast range, we've never had a problem. The road crews are pretty quick about keeping the roads clear. They take particularly good care of the highway that leads to the Grand Rond Casino - coincidence? I think not

The beach itself is usually mild enough that snow isn't an issue.

Talking Rain? Snow? Who Cares?

I was thinking of my travels to and from the coast. (Newport Oregon) In twenty years I have seen snow on the hills, but the roads have only been wet at the time. Never a real problem.
Rain is another situation all together. I've seen buckets come down, the kind where you have to slow way down or stop because the wipers won't handle the volume.
That being said; I have checked the long range forecast and it looks like it will be in the 50's with about a 25% chance of rain for the Thursday through Friday that is all that is available now.
Looks good, can't wait to see you all.

P.S. If anyone has a portable propane heater and bottle for out side use it would be nice to have at the Saturday night potluck. I have one that I'm bringing. So far 1 campfire and one heater.

What other foodstuffs are still needed for the potluck? I'll pass it along to Frances, who is not on the forum.

Sunday breakfast???

So we've all stayed up late after consuming paella, drinking mulled wine and telling stories around the fire........would anyone be up for a group breakfast........either coffee and donuts (ordered out) or potluck breakfast...or whatever??? We'll all still be kicking around in the morning, and would give us another chance to visit before hitching up!
Input please!

Jim

Sounds interesting.... I'm not a high-functioning morning person but hubby is.... a really simple (although not elegant) thing to do would be a big pot of oatmeal and some interesting toppings. Oh yeah and coffee... mmm... coffee....

If anyone's feeling ambitious we've got a big griddle that drops on the camp stove; suitable for batches pancakes, etc. Ideas?

Well, there is always the option of breakfast out....like poppyseed pancakes at the Whale's Tale cafe???

BTW, I'll probably stay over Sunday night and take off for my grand adventure on Monday so if anyone else is interested in another night, that would be swell.

I'm all for breakfast around camp. Oatmeal and coffee sounds good. I can provide extra OJ to share with all, as I always bring along plenty for myself anyway, and I'm bringing the non-alcoholic drinks for dinner.

I'm pretty good at cooking pancakes, but I don't know about for a whole crowd! I'd be willing to give it a shot

Breakfast

We're "up" for either of the suggestions - I could make pancakes on our stovetop, but it sure is SLOW. However, we really like to sleep in while on vacation... what time do you all wake up? I also love to explore little local diners in small towns.. they usually have great breakfasts!

Also - if any of you are willing, my wife teaches Kickboxing and Step areobics - I'm sure she'd be willing to teach a morning class to burn off those carbs we'd be about to eat. Any takers? Weather permitting, I think we'll be out there doing our stuff in the morning.

We'll provide coffee....Starbuck's or equivalent (we have a 30 cup percolator we're bringing for mulled wine anyway) and bring blueberries for fruit (could use for healthy desert Saturday if no one has volunteered on this yet).
BTW....are we catching our own fish, clams, mussels? I haven't seen anyone stepping forward to provide these.
