Yes a back flow preventer. The common problem is that they must be blown out with compressed air or they will freeze in the winter in a cold climate. You cannot just pour antifreeze in them either, they need pressure to push it through the valve.
Is there are part number on this. I think I might just replace it since I'm having issues where my pump doesn't shut off sometimes. I can't find any leaks, but for some reason the pump will just start to run without using any water and then won't turn off. When I turn it off manually and then turn it on again it is quiet.
I've always blown out the lines and then filled them with anti-freeze, but perhaps it is just defective.
The unit in question does NOT connect in any way with the pump or fresh water system in your trailer. It is between the black water tank and the black water tank flush inlet on the outside of your rig. So, it cannot be responsible for the pump issue you mention as it does not connect with it at all. The only way water will flow through it is if you connect a hose to the black water tank flush inlet. One reason they become damaged by freezing is that people forget to blow them out thinking they are part of the regular fresh water piping.

ok. I just blow the thing out since putting antifreeze in is a bit difficult without a separate pump.
