Everytime I get the "omigosh, that's a LOT of money," I trot out...."remember the words of Oscar Wilde...who said, 'cynics know the price of everything and the value of nothing.'" That inevitably quiets things down, though I often have to tell people who have just commented on $ who Oscar Wilde is (was). Oh, and I also have an exotic car....so I'm well practiced at this kind of comment (like every time I fill the gas tank...)

"It cost twice as much as half" usually leaves folks perplexed.

Sbb, do try and keep up

2014 30' flying cloud bunkhouse on order for end of October.

Options: tan ultraleather, 2 ac, awnings all around, and 1000w inverter, no solar for now, no convection oven, preferred gas.

TV: 2010 RAM 2500 Diesel, 49K miles on it, Carmax

Hitch: pro pride on order as of a couple weeks ago, got a great discount on it through my deal with the dealer.

Parking is being arranged in my back yard (see that post) - folks starting digging and grading the area as of this afternoon - more photos of this progress tomorrow perhaps...concrete pad will go down likely in the coming 1-2 weeks or so....the cover for it will likely need to wait till march 2014 when I will get some extra money - my contractor is getting a quote prepped for a nice build to cover..likely wood.

Cost? Ok, here is my stab at a snippy answer:

I forget exactly, but who can put a price tag on getting exactly what you want for the gleeful enjoyment of your family.

It's funny- and people never seem to catch on. During the shopping process the more people told me that it was too expensive the more determined and headstrong I became about buying it.
Don't ever tell me what I shouldn't do. That is the most sure way to make sure I do exactly that.
It's like the negativity talked me into it- sour grapes or whatever.

I love the quote, "Talk is cheap, Airstreams are expensive."

Yet when I have gone to RV shows, and I love most all RVs, when you find an SOB or 5th wheel of comparible quality and features, it costs about the same or more than the Airstreams. And in most cases they are still not leagacy trailers that will last more than 10-15 years if well maintained.

I also see lots of people horrified that I paid for new 30' after saving for years and adding a trade-in, yet don't think anything about dropping $250K for a Class A coach. I have put over 30K miles on my 2012 already, and will probably get at least 2500 more before the year is out.

Once we were bitten by the trailerite bug, our family used the dickens out of what we had. It made a lot of sense to get the nicest travel trailer, that would last a long time, that we dreamed of for years, and is a complete expression of Americana. Sounds like the American dream to me. I don't think I would ever want another kind of RV (except maybe that restored '56 Greyhound bus I saw a few years ago in Buffalo, WY, that was pretty cool).

I also think it is a little rude to ask anyone what something you have cost. There is a saying that goes something like: ‘some people know to cost of everything but the value of nothing.’

One time someone asked the cost of my Airstream, and I felt set-up to reply and say something, and not be rude. So I said: ‘Forgive me for not saying, and I’ll forgive you for asking.’

I think all purchases should be judged by the benefits, advantages or disadvantages they bring to the consumer.

Well,

In the BMW Motorcycle world we said something like..."the cheapest part of a BMW is the part that turns the key!"

I tell ya, you will quickly learn the folks who trust your judgement.

You can say, "ya know, I have decided I will no longer offshore my money... No more buying things made by communist countries by slave labor...didn't we fight a war here to eliminate slavery? What makes it ok to allow others to be exploited?"

Just a tad of a redirect there.

How about some of these for: How much did it cost? How much did you pay?
----------------------------------

Enough to guarantee my kids will love nature and probably not even miss that college degree.

What makes you think I paid for it?
- it was a gift from my ex
- I won it in a (poker game) (karaoke contest) (bet) (dare)
- once my boss saw the footage...

If I tell you, I'll have to tell my wife.

I'll show you the invoice if you pay me 10% of the sale price.

I don't really know - I gave them my bank account number and they seemed happy with that.

You know how they say you should spend 2 months salary on your fiance's engagement ring? That doesn't work for Airstreams.

Let's just say the tip I left the dealer was 5 figures.

Wow - the IRS doesn't even ask me that question!

If I answered that question it would kill all the mystery.

Tell me how much you make and I'll tell you if you can afford one.

Just my 2 cents but I did the 1000 watt inverter thing and in doing so gave away my 2 wet cell batteries and installed 4 AGM's and added a second solar panel for a total of 300W of solar. All of this kind of goes hand in hand. BTW, since I went with 4 AGM's I also upgraded the charger to a 3 stage charger which is better for your batteries anyway.

"You can't put a price tag on quality of life."

"Enough."

"As much as I could afford."

"My kids' inheritance."

"Only the IRS knows for sure."

"Less than it would cost to buy one today."

And the old classic, "If you have to ask, you can't afford one."

Well after putting $4000+ in my 69 so far, plus hundred hours of labor, I have a usable but half finished trailer. I'm still looking at a couple more thousand dollars in supplies and around 100 more hours of labor. After that, I still have to polish.

Right now a trailer payment is looking pretty good....

Never justify anything you do or say to anybody. I finally have my Airstream after wanting one forever. They are the least toxic living situation other than sleeping out in the hay meadow. Agent Orange poisoned civilian here.

I'm currently in the process of installing a dinette in the front of our 21' Sovereign. The dinette was removed from a 2005 SOB, one with a supposed higher end brand name, which I won't mention here. Once you get past the outer pretty, look out. Looks as if they cut up old pallets from behind the local Wal-Mart store to build the frame, and I won't comment on the workmanship. In our Airstream they used better wood for shims under the battery boxes.
