Nice article and a nice story. It makes me think of the life they have experienced and how different it is now... I wonder if an 21 year old taking a job at Airstream today might be there in 55 years....

I think that was a different world....
Most of the folks working at Aurstream sport their Honda motor company factory uniforms, working elsewhere after the AS shift. We live in a world where employees make lateral moves vie .02$ an hour better elsewhere.
Besides, nobody values an artisan or craftsman any more. Just hurry up and make more for the bottom line!

I'm in my mid 40s. I really seek and value things that have some history behind them. The Airstream is chock full if neato cool factor, the longevity of the brand, the Wally factor etc. All this combined lets me overlook the "ultimate science project" factor.

I thought it was interesting that production is slower today than it was in the past. You would think the limited automation would have helped increase production.

I'd like to see even slower production with greater attention to detail. Add a third shift to keep up with demand. QC issues need to be addressed with these. If they want to keep top shelf status, the quality needs to be ramped up. Just sayin'

Too bad the five models of the Classic are discontinued in 2015 with this comment at the dealer meeting:

27FB, 30W, 30A, 31W and 31A Classic Limiteds have reached end of production.

We got one of the last, if not the last, of the Classic Limited model 30 with twin beds.

I think the Classic models took too much time and attention to detail and there was not enough price differential between a standard fully equipped Classic and a loaded International with higher profit plastic (formica) interiors, no wall or ceiling covering and plywood furniture which is much cheaper and quicker to build.

Good news sort of... the classics will now really become true classics. In my opinion, these were the best Airstreams. RIP you wood laden and hideously upholstered boehemouths..

I'm glad I got a Classic 30.
I like the wood interior.
I guess as old relics like me fade away, old relics like the Classic will as well.
I hope she lasts a long time because I don't want any other model.

The Classic as we know it may be discontinued, but there is a 2015 Classic 30. The decor is different. Look at Colonial Airstream's Facebook page.

There is still a 30' Classic being built for 2015. They have simply reduced the number of floor plans to one single new design.
No more tears now....

Looks like curtains and mouse fur are gone. The stereo is in the wall above the thermostat. It has black solid surface counters. The wood is darker. It has panoramic windows in the bedroom. It has more exposed aluminum interior skins and LED puck lights. It might be awesome.
